Rovers North's Reservoir Kit Brake Master Cylinder

Noticed my reservoir leaking from the seals underneath the reservoir. I saw that Rovers North carried a rebuild kit for the reservoir. I am having a difficult time and spending many hours installing what should be a simple rebuild kit and feel that I should have been warned that for the trouble of installing this kit I should have just purchased a completely new master cylinder. I also don't see the point to why RN sells this kit (RNI169) vs. the entire rebuild kit RNF355. Additionally the new o-ring that sits around the outer bore of the rear part of the master cylinder in the kit is too big and does not fit tightly in the groove (see pic), it appears to be 1/16" larger inside diameter than it should be. My D90 is my daily driver and this kit is a big disappointment lacking in instructions and quality parts. I am writing this as a fair warning to all that replacing the reservoir seals is a much more difficult task than the picture in the catalogue makes it look.

Hmmm. Well first off, rebuild kit are really meant for experienced mechanics and don't come with instructions. Rebuild instructions are in the genuine workshop manuals and you can read them there.

RNI169 is a reservoir kit. If that is what you purchased, why do to have the master off? The kit is for the reservoir. You just pull the reservoir, slap in new seals and put the new reservoir on. 5 minute job.

RNF355 is a kit for rebuilding the entire master. A whole different thing.

Lastly.... If you have a concern over the kit, phone RN. They will help you.

I mean...it's not as though we made the kit ourselves, we typically sell what Land Rover offers. I only ever replace the whole master, as it's annoying to rebuild mostly anything unless you're skilled and either enjoy doing it or cannot afford the full unit. I've never heard anyone here recommending rebuilding over replacing the MC.

The OP seems to indicate he was just getting the reservoir kit.... Which can make sense if you have a cracked or leaky reservoir.

This is why I don't understand why he has the master off.

I have the master cylinder off because there's no way to install the plastic water ingress seal or the rubber reservoir seal to the rear of the cylinder. The plastic water ingress seal is on the backside of the master cylinder and sits into the booster, it also has a nozzle that protrudes forward through the rear rubber fitting on the master cylinder. Its impossible to replace the rear rubber reservoir seal with this nozzle in place because the rubber can not easily slip on to the end of the nozzle and tends to deform. Since you're given a new plastic water ingress seal in the kit, the only way to replace that is by taking the master cylinder off and even then it is quite difficult to snap in place on the back of the master cylinder.

Thanks evilfij. I ordered a completely new brake master cylinder unit from them. I was just going to reassemble using one of my old/original o-rings but I've also noticed that the new plastic water ingress seal from the RN kit does not even fit inside the booster (see pic). And one of the clips on my original one broke off in the dissassembly process so it is now unusable. I've had success rebuilding master and slave cylinders on my TR6 and XKE so I am fairly disappointed in this kit due to the difficulty I have had to face resulting from parts that do not fit properly.

Not sure why that part would not fit. Actually, I am not sure I replaced that. Hopefully the new MC works out for you. Certainly a lot easier on the older vehicles to rebuild than on the new ones.

New master cylinder from Rockauto installed and brakes bled! it helps to remove the one bolt on bottom and two nuts top securing the fuse box so you can have more room to swing a wrench. Glad I got a big bottle of Castrol brake fluid from RN because it's very difficult to find at my local auto parts store.
