I just finished torqueing the new head with new bolts and the last valve stem cap slipped off and went into the push rod hole while the push rod was in it. I could see it and it ended up falling all the way in. Totally screwed now?

It's gone past the point where the lifter seats in the bottom of the hole. There are openings on each side. I don't have magnets small enough to get into those spaces.

It will probably be in the oil pan.
Funny thing is that I have to remove that, too, but when I tried, one of the bolts stripped. I just called it a day.

Funny story but moderately relevant had a ford powerstroke 7.3. Went to replace the mechanical fuel pump and the piston off the came shaft fell into the motor. I went t a ford sop the next day and asked them what to do. They went through this super elaborate story to tell me to put a strong magnet on the oil pan and drive it forever. Funny to hear a factory tech tell you that.

I ground a slot into the last sump bolt and still couldn't remove it, so I bought a heavy duty impact driver and it popped right off by barely touching the trigger. I guess an impact driver with 1,000+ lb ft vs an 18V cordless DeWalt impact driver was all I needed. LOL Now to finish slicing through the brand new Permatex that does a very good job at keeping the sump firmly attached to the block.

I stuck a funnel into the lifter port, hit it with the shop vac, et voila! Better late than never.
