I‘ve seen the cost of the computerized LS swaps and I was wonder has anyone swapped in a more old school crate 350/383 V8.…. maybe with an EFI setup. Seeing the LR 3.9 / 4.0 is based off an old school US Buick 215 V8, would something like this be a simpler and cheaper option to swap out for the anemic LR engines?

I was just quoted $30k for a turnkey install on a new LS3 at a shop here in Colorado with great references. I'm doing my best to keep the look of the D90 as OEM as possible but the motor has to GO, it's simply too slow and honestly dangerous trying to drive up I70 through the mountains. Are there other motors which I should consider or is this best bang-for-buck. (FYI- I had a 300TDI and not going there again.)
Well with all the LS conversions going on and dead D1 laying around due to rust there must be some 3.9's or 4.0L out there that are actually stamped with Land Rover on them...Its a solid engine which is different from the best engine or the fastest engine but then again if that is the driving factor in our decisions, why would we be in a Land Rover? lol:unsure:

There’s a thread on it here

A friend installed one here in Atlanta and it runs well

I’m installing one within the next few months

-No modifications to frame, bulkhead or tunnel

-Wiring is simple

-Add a Holley efi to upgrade the performance

Aside from info on this forum, the Chevy inline 6 is a very common swap in South Africa for Series and Defenders. They’ve been doing it for decades. Unfortunately because the engine is not original, we can’t import those.

To be fair, I’m also doing an LS swap. This is completely modernizing it. The inline six is a good upgrade for a more traditional feeling engine in these old trucks

i guess i did it wrong...
I have an ROW 1997 300 TDI that just blew up after 1000 miles. ike to know how you did it "wrong". Would like to do a second hand engine and 6 speed gm transmission (auto) with LT230. I have a 1.4 in my LT230 but can find a disco one for cheap and have it rebuilt. I am new to this forum, but have 7 cars mostly in Africa. I found I can't do the 300 TDI on us roads and have gone down several rabbit holes. I figure people know how to fix these and I cant spend tons more on this car its getting spendy.

I was being sarcastic..

I think rebuilding or replacing a 300 will cost less than an LS and auto box swap.

Matt, I’m just up the road from you in Lone Tree. I was wondering if you could share the shop name; and did you end up doing the swap with them?

Is there a significant cost difference when doing an LS swap on a ROW vs a NAS ? Would the NAS already having a gas V8 make the swap simpler ?

Nothing huge, the cost of a few brackets perhaps. The big cost difference I’ve noticed is between doing an LS and LT Swap.
Seems everything related to the LT swap cost just a little more, roughly $4-5k more (all in) from my experience.

Some of the factory NAS components make setting up the evaporative emissions system a little easier. A lot of people omit this step, but if you do, you end up with a vented fuel cap and the constant smell of gas around the back of the vehicle.
