Those of you in California that have your truck registered in Montana. Who are you using for insurance these days? I can't go the collector route, due to not having a fully enclose garage, unfortunately.
* USAA gives me full-coverage with no problems on my 1993 Defender 110, along with a 2008 RR Sport supercharged and a 2020 Audi Q7.
Give them a try. You can get a quote and ID cards online.

Happy to share, I got my 94' 110 registered, titled and plated in CA with no more than a lenghty wait.
Never set foot in DMV.
Did it all via mail.
Worked .
Then again, it's a pre - 1995 Diesel and I am Active duty.

I wonder if I could pull that off with my 83' 110 4 cylinder gasoline. If not, I'll have to sell it out of state.
I noticed one of the larger builders has stated that pre 95 diesels can be registered In their experience. Im getting a lot of mixed opinions on here. Is there an authority we can speak to about getting a solid answer? I have a very late 94 with a factory 300tdi. Vin code verified as a factory soft top and 300tdi. Date stamps in the frame from ‘94 It’s all numbers matching with original engine. What would prevent this from being registered in CA?

If CA DMV is anything like CT DMV everyone you ask will give a different answer.

It’s like fast food- don’t ever order anything not on the menu or it’ll be a big problem. They issue plates and licenses and anything unusual causes angina.

San Diego here- any other local reputable repair shops in the county for a '95? I will be reaching out to Defender Traders, but I don't need any of their specialization on Carb etc. Just hoping for maintenance and discuss some upgrades. Thanks

Lucky ?
Nope.

Followed the CA VC and DMV regs to the letter
1. Diesel
2. Pre 1995
3. Nothing altered
4. Previously titled in CONUS
5. Not a recent import
6. Active duty military.

It probably helps that I am not a car flipper or reseller, or one of these guys bringing these in to make a quick buck.
Will probably come with me to my next duty station anyway.

Before you do,
Do a bit of reading on G&K.
Not exactly great news. They seem to ask for $ upfront, like $5k. And they offer no guarantee that it will meet CARB certification.
And there is NO refund.

Word to the wise.

1993 110 Tdi owner , legally registered.
Having gone through this process, G&K is not nearly as scary as the internet makes them seem. I talked to one of their techs that handles a lot of the vehicles and they seem to take responsibility for getting your car compliant.

Here's the latest curveball in getting a Defender registered in CA after going through the CARB process. All of my paperwork is done and ready to be sent in to DMV but CHP is currently refusing to give me the VIN verification unless I can produce import paperwork. Apparently a bunch of cars have been skirting the 25 year rule and Florida has been just manufacturing titles for stolen vehicles so CHP is taking extra precautions. Pretty pissed since I'm $40k into the CA legal process right now.

I'm hoping Arkonik will be able to produce the import paperwork. The car has been registered in the US since 2019 in multiple states....

Do a VIN verification with a private VIN verification service. They are licensed by the DMV to do so. $100 and you can move on to the next peg.

Wish it was that easy. DMV was the one that required CHP to be involved. If the vehicle is missing the federal conformance sticker or plate, which would be any imported vehicle, DMV will not handle it and it must be handled by CHP.
