Does anyone with a 200tdi and a VDO tach know which switches on the back should be switched?
Or at least what a revs a 200 idles at?
first was 5800
second was 1000
3 try was about 700

Why recommend going with a 4000 rpm gauge? Idle is correct, gauge is calibrated and needle frequently bottoms out. Seems like poor advice to me. Why have a gauge that can't show you a reading when it's bottomed out? I'm going to sell my 4k and get a 6k gauge. Unfortunately it's too late to return it.

I'm going to order a laser tach. The reading on the new VDO is a lot higher than my old tach so I assume it needs to be adjusted. It bottoms out at 4000 quite often during normal driving. Doesn't seem right to me.

I had mine set to the, about, 700 rpm. The main thing is not what it reads exactly but what it does after you drive it for awhile. You will soon find the normal and when it goes outside of the normal you will know something is up. The VDO takes the reading from the tach so you will never be able to get it exact no matter what you do.

What dip switch settings did you end up with? Mine are: off off off (all down) and idle shows 1100 RPM on the new VDO tach. The idle is "normal" so I'm wondering what setting would lower the reading. I have tried many different settings.
Seems like it was off, off on. But that was a while back and I'd have to disassemble to confirm.

I followed the good enough route. Flipped the switches until I got around 700RPM. Easy and quick.

ohhhh...k

guess I am just anal and would want to know what the true RPM's are vs good enough.
Nothing wrong with that. Although I really can't imagine any circumstance where thinking you are at 3000 rpm and really being at 3010 would matter.

Rug,

You know you can buy the little green condoms and slip them onto your bulbs and the color will match. I might have a couple of extras since I am going to install blue LEDS in mine :)

Ever heard the saying: "I asked for the time and he told me how to build a clock".

Does your engine idle normally? Okay, that's 700 rpm give or take. Get the tach to read that at idle.

Done. Now have fun bouncing off the tach.

Tach is 333-156 (4000 rpm) or 333-158 (6000 rpm)

I think the settings for the 3 switches are

up
down
up

Maybe someone can confim the settings

After you have the proper switch settings there is an adjustment on the side of the tach. My understanding is that you use a timing light connected to a petrol car with tach, connect timing light to spark plug wire, put mark on your dampner, rev car to 1000 RPM, rev your diesel so the timing mark matches the light and adjust your tach to 1000 RPM

Make sense?
