Hi Guy's

I am thinking to upgrade ( bigger) my intercooler for the 300tdi. They claim to get 35% more power increase. Before i start i would like to get some feedback from guys that have done this mod.

Is it worth the penny's and does it makes a huge difference. You get more torque, and more power. That is what i am looking for.
 
Its a worthwhile upgrade if you don't pay the huge premium for the real unit. At close to $800 bucks its on the pricey side but the construction is second to none.

If you want the cheap power route go with the XS power one from SSAUTOCHROME

You will need a welder to make mounts for it and some new hoses.

they have the best prices and colors avail ( I went with black with no logo), they also carry SS Tbolt clamps for cheap
 
I just got done removing a giant intercooler from my D90, the bodgy installation of which almost cost me a long-planned trip to alaska, and did cost me the ability to get over the continental divide to get to the national rally last year.

After I removed the large intercooler and went back to stock, I noticed NO appreciable loss in power. The turbo is simply too small for it to make that much of a difference.

Remember, putting a huge intercooler in won't give you much of an increase at all. the 35% gain is only gained by turning up your injection pump - that is where the power comes from when they say 35%. When you turn the injection pump up more your new fatty intercooler allows the hotter exhaust gasses to cool better so you don't burn anything up.

Putting a new intercooler in doesn't do much if you don't turn the fuel up... which in turn hurts your economy

Then i stick with my old one! Thanks for the info. If you read the articles and story's about bigger intercoolers they claim to get much more power and torque. So it is tempting to change it. Some times i have to tow a small jet boat up the hill and it would be nice to have a bit more power.

That is an option. But before i do this costly procedure i would like to know from guy's that have done this before and like to get there feedback. If there is almost no noticeable difference between a upgrade vs original. It is not worth it to me. But if there is a big difference then yes i am seriously leaning towards a upgrade.
 
If you are looking for a bit more performance you could turn the injection pumps eccentric cone pin that is hooked to the diaphragm a quarter of a turn. That will effect the fuel delivery.

Put a pyrometer into your blanking plate and monitor the exhaust gas temps. If you aren't running too hot then you should be fine. If you are running slightly hot but love the performance then I would get a slightly bigger intercooler.
 
I think we all need to remember the intercooler doesn't have much to do with EGTs.... the exhaust gases will melt your turbo if they get too high, but the intercooler is there to cool down the intake air after compression from the turbo... Boyle's law dictates that air must heat up if compressed like what happens in the turbo. The intercooler sits between the turbo and the intake manifold, not anywhere in the exhaust chain.

Intake -> Turbo (intake side) -> Intercooler -> Intake Manifold -> Engine -> Turbo (exhaust side) -> Out
