Zu Alloys On Older Defender

893 Views 16 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  klineakin
I have a 1991 Defender 110. I would like to purchase some alloys but, I do not want to use spacers. I am doing my research and I am getting lots of conflicting opinions on this topic. Has anyone mounted 16" Zu Alloys (or any other alloys...blindo, bowler, boost, etc.) on a 200TDI Defender with stock axles and rear drum brakes without the use of spacers or other modifications?
Thanks

You dont need spacers for any wheels like Zu's that do not cover the drive flange. Spacers are used to clear the drive flange on the earlier trucks.

That was my thought also but, Bowler Motors told me that their wheel (which doesn't cover the flange) will not fit my year truck as the hub assembly diameter (the part that the flange bolts to) is slightly larger than what was used on 1994+ model year 300TDI trucks and therefor would not fit without spacers. Rovers North has told me the same regarding Blindo's. I can't get any clear answer regarding the Zu's wheels from any reseller or manufacturer. I may be misunderstanding something but, just wanted confirmation from someone who has done this before I ship wheels over from the UK.
Apologies on behalf of whoever told you that at Rovers North, but it is untrue as far as I can tell.
It's very possible I wasn't articulating my concerns properly with RN. I just called them back and was told that Blindo's will fit. Appreciate the help!

Z.G. is the sales mgr @ RN which is why he appologized.

I figured Z.G. had a connection to RN which is what prompted me to call again. Glad I did call RN again as I am now confident that the Blindo's will fit.

Follow up to my wheel selection efforts. I gave the Blindo's a try and they did not fit over the hubs on my stock 1991 truck. They seemed to just catch where the drive flange meets the hub assembly. I may give Zu Alloys a try. Will report an update on my findings.
I do apologize about that, seems the information provided to us was incorrect. I have resolved the web info

Not a problem, at least now we all know! Appreciate all the information and help you have provided along the way
I am now looking into Zu Alloy wheels and again getting conflicting opinions on fitting a 1991 Defender. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of fitting Zu Alloys to an older Defender (pre 94 with stock rear drum brakes)? Thanks
Get the wheels brother. You’ll be more than happy. The weight saving alone and better offset are worth it. I’m running no spacers. Fits just right.

Great looking 110, thanks Ephry73 for posting and replying! I ended up ordering a set of Terrafirma Dakar wheels from Rimmmer Bros. I reached out to Terrafirma and was told that their wheels have a 115mm bore hole diameter and that they absolutely will fit (my stock steel wheels have a bore hole diameter of 114.5mm). Once I get the wheels, I will post a picture mounted on my truck, assuming they fit!

Thanks brother. Sorry I couldn’t reply earlier. Offset and weight are key also. Post back when you get the new wheels mounted. E

Received and mounted Terrafirma Dakar wheels (they are made and marked by Evo Corse). I purchased a set of five from Rimmer Bros at $185/wheel. I am running a 1" OME lift with Fox shocks and 265/75/16 BFG KO2 tires. Everything fit well with only slight adjustments needed to the steering stops. Truck drives well (except for some alignment/return to center issues). Will post pics soon.
