Hello everyone,

Recently moved from VA Beach to Roanoke, VA and as soon as I got here noticed a large amount of white smoke from the exhaust at idle in my 1991 RHD 110 200 TDI. Have actually noticed less white smoke at engine start, but the problem usually is most noticeable when sitting at a stoplight (and usually covers the car behind me in a cloud of smelly white exhaust). Clears if I rev the engine, returns at idle). From the the threads it looks like it could be a whole mess of different things. I have some basic mechanical skills and have enjoyed tinkering with this beast so far, anything I can try checking/fixing on my own? Should I avoid driving it until I get this figured out?

Smell it and make sure it smells like diesel and not coolant.

Check timing first.

Injectors second.

The more reading I have done, the more it sounds like the head gasket. I went and bought some head gasket repair stuff and when I pulled the radiator plug and started the engine, white smoke started coming out of the radiator (and the open reservoir tank).

A head gasket is very unlikely. It would not cause white smoke.
