Which rear door- galvanized or Puma?

All:

I need to replace my rear door, and I want it to be as corrosion resistant as possible. As I see it, there are two options- an OEM that's been galvanized or a used 'Puma' or gen 2 door from a later Defender.

Thoughts? Mine is beyond repair & I bought a used one to fix up, but wasn't planning to have it galvanized- just painted.

Thanks

Paul.

Pretty sure the new doors are are galvanized. Not a heavy coating like you would get by dipping it but the new style galvanized coating that they use on the new cars.

Also the door and skin are made of steel so less concern about dissimilar metals and the frame is stamped so no welds to break.
Thanks Dave. The galvy one is a lot cheaper but I'm more concerned about longevity.

IMHO go puma unless you are doing some kind of period correct restoration.
Puma

Does anyone know year specific Puma fitment info for earlier model Defenders.

Huh? It's all the same door.
"Puma" doors fit all years of defender. They started fitting them way back in the 2000's, waaay pre Puma, something like 2003/2004 I think it was.

you just have to change the position of the striker (and maybe the striker itself) as the lock is at a different height.

Don't think any of the parts from the old door will swap over to the new one, maybe the wiper motor if you McGyver it a bit
I bought the SP4x4 galvanized rear door last year and it is a great door. I bought their door because it was cheaper than the puma door and I could use my old door's glass. The puma doors have a different glass pattern and SP4x4 did not have the puma door glass available last year.
I purchased my new style rear door from SP and the glass / seal from Rear Door and Quarter Light Windows for Land Rover Defender

Happy with service from both
Thanks guys. Will my Mantec wheel carrier fit the newer style door?

Mantec makes two door plates. One for the older door and one for the pressed doors. So you might need to replace the plate section. Or maybe you can add the necessary holes depending if the old plate covers all the holes on the new door....

I'd not do the Puma doors - have had a couple come through with rust bubbles on the lower door section as the frame and skin are steel. Early door type with galvanized frames should last as long as the rest of the truck in your intended destination. Additionally you can easily replace the rear glass yourself on the early doors, less so on the puma door.
Thanks Brian. Any experience with these?

I have a Mantec wheel carrier on my SP4x4 rear door.
Have some on the shelves... Decent build quality, and with the pound where it is right now the direct price is a few dollars better than my price...

Brian:

What is your price? SP wants 420GBP shipped which is $537 today. 150 quid shipping seems like a lot!

Thanks,

Paul.
What’s the latest & greatest on SW rear doors? The used door I’ve been fixing up is too knackered so I am trying to figure out what route to go. I’m thinking this...
