What do you bring with you on long trips?

Like some of you, I'll be taking my 110 to the 75th Anniversary Party at Greek Peak. The plan is to drive it from eastern Massachusetts, which looks like a 5h drive using the highways, and probably a couple more taking the "my truck doesn't like going 65mph" route.

In light of this roundtrip journey, and then four or so days of off-roading in the middle, what would you recommend I take with me? Thinking spare parts, fluids, tools, etc.

Here's my loadout (which lives in the truck 100% of the time) off the top of my head:

Tools:
  • Full tool roll with wrenches from 8mm up to 21mm. Numerous sockets in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch. A few oddball wrenches. A chain wrench. Needle nose pliers. Screwdrivers.
  • Farm jack and associated pin receiver for the LR mounts.
  • Fluid syringe for filling up diffs/transmission.
  • Grill lighter
  • Folding shovel
  • 12v air compressor
  • Allen key sets
  • Moving blanket

Fluids:
  • Spare oil, coolant (for the R2.8), brake fluid, transmission fluid. Numerous cleaners like degreasers, spray window cleaner.
  • Radiator stop leak (since my Allisport radiator is now deciding to leak - UGH)

Spare parts:
  • Oil filter
  • Fuel filter
  • 2x brake master cylinders (don't ask)
  • accessory belt for the R2.8
  • Fuses

Disposables:
  • Paper towels
  • Latex gloves

Plus recovery gear (winch, snatch block, tree saver strap, soft shackles, hard shackle), recovery boards (used more for leveling the truck when camping than anything else.

I plan on heading out to Greek Peak Thursday from the North Shore. It'll be nice to meet you!

I've been refining my tool list- but bottom line is to have a think about what your vehicle needs in order to move, and pack appropriately for that.

Series with stock axles should have spare half shafts and gaskets for rebuild. A spare diff is excessive, but if you upgraded your half shafts to "unbreakable" ones, you'll break other stuff, such as the ring gear, which exactly what I did in my '71 in North Africa. (I was able to drive front wheel drive for a couple days until we acquired another diff)

Here's what I have so far, with a few place holders until I identify what I need exactly. I will pare down to only what I need, as this bag gets very heavy and should not be touched if maintenance is up to date...

Cool, I'm excited to meet some more folks from MA! Just curious - have you thought about which route you're taking? Unfortunately, I'm heading out on Weds, otherwise I'd say we should convoy out there.

This is excellent, thanks Jim!

Maybe add a blue poly tarp from HF/Walmart for getting under vehicle

AAA Premier Membership (200 mi free tow included) - Obtain at least 8 days prior to trip as there is a 7 day hold on the long tow benefits..

If you already have a AAA Membership, you can upgrade for a reduced/prorated cost for the remainder of your year's membership period, but again, at least 8 days before trip..

While Jim's list is impressive, it is probbably more appropriate for the out in the middle of nowhere by yourself type trip. At Greek Peak you will be surrounded by like minded enthusiasts that will likely have many of the tools and experience necessary to assist you.

So I'd be most concerned with a basic tool kit, fluids/filters/belts/hoses specific to your vehicle and anything else that tends to be a common failure point (eg. NAS V8's should typically carry fuel pump relays, ignition rotor/cap/spare leads)..

Beyond that, basics like fuses, gloves, paper towels to clean-up, etc..

Hope I can join you guys, we'll see..

Good idea but it's never in the right place... I was advised long ago to carry a jumpsuit and even with 110+ heat, it's nice to peel that off and be (relatively) clean after replacing a rear axle assembly...

Me, in orange (saved from my prison days) working on mike's truck in the parking lot of some hotel somewhere in North Africa...

😂 I used to wear ear plugs on long trips. I'm not sure either option is technically legal in most states. Supposedly the Apple AirPod Pros offer similar NRR to foam ear plugs, around 23db..

I wear earplugs on any long trip.

Look at the OSHA exposure limit charts- soft sounds over a long period of time are as bad as loud over a short period of time.

Jim, grabbed a buddy’s spare LT230 and drove for days til my old one went out. Changed on Rimrocker trail in CO at about 9,500 ft. Lack of O2 was bigger concern than dirt, but tarp helped!

I swapped a transmission/t-case in Gibraltar and tarps between the trucks had us only dealing with the mud river flowing under the trucks, so that was good.

Me in my orange prison suit…

In my experience that jumpsuit gets you a starring role with a cheap plastic lawn chair, a big knife, and some angry dudes, LOL.

I think OP will be OK makingthe journey to NY.

If not, he can rent a UHaul truck and trailer and tow the truck home. Been there..

You completely missed the big gulp cup with a 40 on ice... But I've got the other items covered.
