Looking over the thread I've noticed mention on Rover Specialist (Vinnie) but not any feedback. I've also seen KOS Motorcars in Montclair.

Anyone have any experience with Rolf's Auto in Summit, NJ? I've heard he can be pricey but that's about it.

I just had a steering pump replaced at Euro Motors in Garwood, NJ. Victor is a straight shooter with a reasonable price.

Shopping for a Roof Assembly - Defender 110 S.W.

Looking over my most cherished toy, and in the constant pursuit of perfection, I am considering getting a new roof. It seems that the one it came with has been sat on or slightly buggered, and when I look at it from above normal standing height, it just ain't right. I can't imagine how one would take something as flimsy yet expanisive as a D110 SW roof and putty it or reinforce it to return it to "as new" straight condition. In looking at the Rovers North catalog, I see a mind numbing $7,500 price for a replacement. Insanity. Does anyone know of a good, inexpensive source for a replacement? I imagine one should be had for 10-20% of that price. If its used but straight, that's great. Hard to imagine there are a bunch of LR junkyards out there to search through. In the rocky mountains if you know of one. Any suggestions? Thanks

It seems like there are fewer shops specializing in major. repair and restoration on Defenders, particularly as the dealers are leaving the off-road image behind. We have been restoring, repairing, and writing about Land Rover since 1988 in Springfield, MA

We have trucks and trailers and can pick up and deliver service all over the east coast.

We are J E Robison Service, 347 Page Boulevard, Springfield, MA. 413-785-1665 or [email protected]. JE Robison Service | Service, repair and restoration of fine motor cars or robisonservice.blogspot.com

Wanted to put a plug in for Abacus Racing in Va Beach, VA. They work on a ton of cool older classic cars and had a D90, some D1s, and a couple of RRCs there. John is there LR guy and did a great job trouble shooting Power Steering problems and steering slop, as well as Fuel tank/sender issues. Highly recommend. Hourly rate was $95, which I didn’t think was bad.

110 Defender Door stuck. Huulp!

Today I made a mistake by saying “I can’t believe how reliable my defender has become. Then, 2 hours later, after normally exiting my Landy, I went to get back in and the driver door is stuck closed- hard.

The door key turns like normal. At the end of its range where you’d expect a satisfying “clink” it now goes “click”. When you pull the inside handle, it acts normally, except the fort doesn’t open. When you pull up on the door lock, it just kind of bushes up in am ambiguos way- like it always has. I checked, and the should belt is not stuck in the door gasp as it is sometimes- but rarely, wont to do.

Any advice on how to get my door unlocked? Thanks!!

Do you realize that you are posting this in a discussion thread re finding and/or recommending mechanics to work on our rigs? - you did the same thing further up the page except that one was for help finding a roof. ????

How about any recommended shops in south OC Cali?
Really late to respond to this one, but figured I would for the info. I have a 110 and live in south OC. I’ve honestly had a hard time finding a shop I love. From what I can tell, there are two main shops that work on a lot of Defenders and LRs. First is West Coast Rovers in Lake Forest. I liked them once or twice, they know what they are doing, but unless you are dropping SERIOUS cash, I never felt like I was being taken seriously. The breaking point was when I took my 110 in for some electrical work, to took a month and when I came to get it they changed me like $1500 and nothing had been fixed. Basically I got charged a boat load for them to explore and not end up fixing anything. In fact a few things were worse off.

the other shop is British 4x4 in Mission Viejo. Again mixed. I felt their price point was a bit better than West Coast Rovers. But just be prepared for a bit of a guilt trip every time you go in. Not an exaggeration, every time I take it in, they mechanic sighs and says, “you know I hate working on these”. Meanwhile I look around at the other Series I, II, 110s and Defenders and I feel like saying, “your name is British 4x4. I brought you a British 4x4 and I’m paying to have you look at it. What else am I supposed to do?” Grrr. Anyhow, all that said, they have done some decent work.

Finally, there’s Uncle Joe’s in San Clemente CA. He actually USED to own British 4x4 back in the day. He opened up another shop in San Clemente. He won’t take on big projects (like engine swaps or full restos... I’ve asked), but he’s good for any short-term need. He is now my go-to.

Hope that helps.

I called "Vinnies" shop and was asked if I had a history with the shop. I was given the impression that they did not want to work on stranger's trucks. I've heard that he is a jerk.

I've had a very good experience with City Side garage in Holliston, mass. They are the best.

Any Hampton Roads guys have a reliable place to get electrical work done? I’ve been chasing gremlins ever since I bought the truck and I’m considering someone to just fix everything once and for all. Nothing major (blinker, headlights, small annoying intermittent stuff). Also I realize that they are Lucas electrics so there isn’t really such a thing as “once and for all”...
Yocum’s Hotrods.

Kyle did a frame-on overhaul of my ’69 Series IIA four years ago. My Seriess IIA is my daily driver (when it’s not freezing or pouring with rain.)
Eric does his electrical work. He’s a retired Navy Electronics Technician and he’s awesome. We pulled the Lucas harness out and replaced with a harness from summit racing.
I can’t recommend Kyle’s shop enough. Kyle is a world class metal shaper and the crew he’s got is extremely talented and experienced.

For you TX blokes - just suck it up and go to Austin and see the gang at Royal Overaland....
Do you recommend Royal Overland over Austin Roverworks? @LuisC recommended them in Austin in a similar thread (Land Rover Mechanic Directory). I'm moving to north Austin in July and could use some help.

Respectfully,

John
