Seat Box Restoration

Is there any particular reason why the battery box under the seat should not be sealed as well as possible in the corners and such?

Ventilation is important along with heat dissipation.
Ventilation for what? Heat?
My seatbox doesnt have any working vents?!

For the battery... Batteries release Hydrogen gas during charging

Should have added that Hydrogen is not toxic... but at high concentrations is a highly explosive gas.
Only if you are not using a sealed battery. Anyone that wants a sealed battery compartment should used sealed batteries.

Sealed batteries are not really "sealed". The caps have pressure valves.

Sealed batteries still produce Hydrogen... it's significantly less but still produce it.

The valves only release in the event of catastrophic overcharge. They normally do not vent. as long as your charging system is working normally, there will be no venting.
I use a dry cell battrey.

Of course, being a seatbox, there is also the methane gas consideration.... :grin

True... But this is a Rover battery. :)

I'd be more worried about carbon monoxide

Because LR electrical systems are known for their quality and reliability? SMH
If the battery overcharged to the extent that the pressure relief valve blew, you have a lot more to worry about than a bit of hydrogen in the battery box.
I don't think Hydrogen has been coming out of modern car batteries for decades, ever since the SLA was invented...like in the 70's. I guess there are lots of folks on this board in their 50's or 60's so they probably caught the tail end of the demise on the non-SLA.

That said, hydrogen can't be held in by much anyways due to the size of the atoms. Especially not a Defender seatbox, even if you caulked every seam with gallons of epoxy or silicone.

My opinion is that you don't want to seal anything on the ground floor of a Defender that well, especially the steel battery box. Anything sealed well holds water and the requisite ions, which in turn leads to corrosion.

My battery box has holes in the bottom anyways for the battery tie-down. Some dust gets in there, but that's easily hosed out, which has to be done regardless.

You clearly have no idea... it only takes 1-2 psi

Unless Canadian batteries are filled with Unicorn tears and made out of unobtainium metal plates
I would explain, but you guys just want to randomly argue.... Do whatever you wish.
Pass the popcorn!

I believe in The Dro. He keeps the Metro running ?
As for gas check valves, do they actually exist in SLA car batteries? I thought they just depended on hydrogen permeability to let evolved hydrogen gas escape. If they have valves, I have no idea where they would be located as I've never seen one on the surface of a battery.
Reading with a French accent isn't working for me any more. I'm out.
