in Tanzania now, had to replace the universal joints on the front prop shaft. The shop insisted on installing the telescoping end facing forward, toward the dif, even though the original direction was facing the gearbox.

I quickly caught this and had them turn it around, as the manual indicates to do so. But they argued it's "better" and "safer". They even claimed that all new models install the prop shaft this way, even though I checked the other cars in their shop were all facing the gearbox...

Due to language barrier I left the shop not very convinced of either, so asking around now for my own curiousity. Are there any advantages to installing the telescoping end on the front prop shaft facing forward (away from the gearbox).

This is on a 1995 defender 110, 300 tdi. standard suspension.

IMO the telescoping end is better protected facing the the gearbox. I don't see how turning 180deg would gain any performance or safety.

It does not matter from a functional perspective. As above, it is a bit more out of the dirt and mud at the transfer case end.
