1987 defender row with 3.9 v8 from disco1.

I’m at that stage where I’ve got it running and driving but just beginning to understand and discover how far it is from being a decently reliable driver.

Also any pointers about where oil pressure and temperature sensors are located?

As well as the inlet and outlet for a heater core? Looks like one tube is capped off by the water pump and another uncapped spot next to it. Is the capped one the outlet to the heater core and the other the return?

Also the fan is running all the time? Bad fan clutch or thermostat or both or who knows, which do I change first?

Thanks for your expertise and wisdom…

Oil pressure is located just above the filter on timing cover, temp sensors if you have A/C you have 3 all are in vicinity of thermostat. AC is two spade, ecu is Amp connector (similar to that of injectors) ND the gauge will be a single either spade or bullet connector based on year. disco engine will be a bullet connector

Bad sound. Sounds like you have no oil pressure. You need to pull the distributor and spin oil pump gear with a high speed drill. There are many threads here on priming oil pump. Heater hoses attach to steel tubes that run along just above right valve cover. Look to be missing on your engine

Oof, ok, thanks for the heads up on the oil pressure.

The truck came with no heat (Kuwait). Does anyone have a picture or what should be there that’s missing?

It should quiet down once you have oil pressure. You can’t asses damage until you remedy that. Tell tails are oil pressure light not extinguishing or a lifter tick indicating wiped cam lobe(s).
My light never came back on so it seems that it’s not hooked up or something when the engine swap happened in Kuwait. I’ll see if I can connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge, any suggestions for easy fits for the 3.9 v8 ?
