The starting vehicle:
1986 110 with 2.5 liter Petrol engine, leaking fuel tank, and interior and under hood area covered in carpet and other sound deadening material.

Purchased from a UK dealer. It was used by DRA for flight testing of countermeasures equipment. Unique in that it had 44,500 miles and was without front vents presumably to cut down on noise and interference.

Why is shifting through 1,2,3 Drive a bad thing? Will it wear out my trans faster that way?
Anyway I'll look into the torque converter see if I can find one.
Where can I find a diesel trans governor ?

Cheers
get a 300tdi or bmw 524td, both used the 4hp22 trans

So your saying to just find an auto trans that can behind those diesels and use that?
I thought the 300tdi was always the 5sp?

No I was answering your question on where you can get the correct gov. There were many 300tdi automatic discos made. That said, swapping to the right transmission would get you the correct torque converter and governor body.
can we see some pics of the Isuzu powered RR?
Hey I'm having the same issue with my OM617 swap in my Disco. You think it could be the same problem. If I'm at half a tank and hard on the pedal or going up hill it just cuts the fuel off and dies.
I'm going to remove the disco inline filter and do away with it as I don't think its needed.
Then do a full diesel purge and with new filters and hope that works.
So you just pull the fuel line going to the IP and cranked it over to test the flow?
Cheers.

PS thanks for the VERY first adaptor by the way, still going strong : )
First off manually shifting the ZF won't help much when say you are in 3rd or D.
With the V8 governor and ZF transmission, you'll auto shift up and down when you take you foot off and on the accelerator before you get a chance to shift manually. The auto shifting will happen at the wrong times, at least it did before we straightened out the V8 ZF bolted to the Isuzu 4JB1-T.

You'll need to have a V8 torque converter rebuilt for the proper stall speed, and you'll need a governor from a diesel powered ZF like BMW to square your shifting away. Years ago, it was Pendy's expertise that helped me over the first time solving this and am grateful for his help.

The stall speed for the 300TDI is much lower compared to the Isuzu 4JB1-T and Mercedes OM617 at 2,300 RPM.

It looks like a normal RR on the outside. It is a very quick and quiet compared to a 200tdi, however!
It will be at the Cove this weekend.

OM617 Oil Pans are coming out...

Here is a picture of 13 adapter castings and 9 oil pan castings that went to the machine shop months ago.

The second batch of oil pans for the 90 & 110 conversions is in the final stages.
If you do the simple addition, the other 4 pans are almost done which are part of a 13 unit production batch which will come out in chunks through the fall and winter.

Dropping these 4 off at the welding shop this morning, see second picture.
Then after they are welded will go to the machine shop for the final finishing.
In a few weeks we should have 4 more oil pans ready for anyone wanting a kit.

In summary, have sold 1 kit from this second batch, so will have 3 complete kits for the 90 - 110 available shortly if anyone wants one.

Bringing the OM617 110 to the Cove this weekend if anyone cares for a test drive.
The OM617 is federalized and completely approved by all applicable US agencies, so there should be no issues with converting a 90 or 110.

We also have some transmission mounts for the Short Belhousing "Stumpy" R380 and LT77 if you need these for your conversion shown in the last picture.

And we still have 3 kits left for the Series IIA and III available as well.
We won't run another IIA - III batch until next year.

Then that should end the production run of the OM617 conversion.

Those oil pans look like they took a ton of hard work to get right.

Kudos.
Looks great Robert!

Question on the tranny mounts - are these needed to use a stubby R380 with the OM617 conversion or are they an upgrade from the stock Rover tranny mounts? Also what is the price for them? Thanks

Don:
They are only required if you had say a V8 or TDI and were using the stubby R380 or LT77.

If you are replacing a 2.25 or 2.5 (non-TDI) you should already have a set.

I think they are $199 and are new, but will have to double check.
The reason is pricing is different for me having a 1 off verses a dozen sets manufactured.
Preping the Mercedes 110 wil oil change and fluid checks this morning, then heading out for the conclave.
Test drives available if interested.

200tdi 90s and 110s use these too. Just to clarify. They position the transfercase and gearbox in the early 4 cylinder location. You'll probably want to switch floors and trans tunnel if making that change. And driveshafts too.
Got this today - I have a bunch of work ahead of me but love how these Merc diesel's sound.

Robert - I am aways out on really getting into it but wanted to make a plan on how to prep this.

Was thinking:
- this thing is filthy - will do a good cleaning first off - any recommend procedure or good product to get cut the grim?
- pull valve cover and clean and polish
- oil pan obviously - what do you recommend to seal it? Merc gasket or Right Stuff?
- pull the cruise control, AC compressor, tranny coolant lines - anything else I can remove?
- thinking of pulling the turbo and taking a look inside

I will have a ton more questions as I get more into it but so far really excited. This old Mercedes lump just oozes German engineering.

Those should polish up nicely to a chrome-like luster. :grin

But in all seriousness, nice work.

Lets schedule a call and I'll help work through a plan for you.
I am really looking forward to seeing Don's come together. Ever since I saw mercedes rover's 88 and 109 I have been in love with the MB diesels in rovers. If only Ike would sell me his 80in shop truck with the MB 4 cylinder ....

Can't wait to see the pan although it will be some time before I actually get to it.

Sounds good on the call - it might be a few over the course of the project if you don't mind, haha

I will try and document it best I can although it will be very hard to compete with the level of detail of Mercedes Rover's thread on Portal. I have said it before, when I grew up with my grandfather and dad running diesel Benz's. My grandfather was brutal on cars and cheap as hell and the Mercedes diesels he had just kept on running and running. My dad liked them as they were so nice to wrench on plus in the 80's you could pick up old W115 and 116's for a song.
I think you have all the kit less the oil pan which will be shipped as soon as the shop gets the finish work done.
Before you know it you'll be the expert... now that you have your own OM617 you're on your way!

Kits are finally starting to go out the door...

Oil Pan... Series kit vs 90 & 110 kit.

These pictures provide a visual of the very different oil pans.

The custom pan for the 90 & 110 has a notch to clear the front diff tube and allows the OM617 to be installed without any suspension mods or diff travel limitations.

The pan for the Series IIA & Series III has a front sump and is actually a modified stock oil pan.

When you see the 2 pans side by side, it is easy to tell why you can't modify the stock oil pan to fit a 90 or 110.

Note the slant of both sumps to compensate for the engine being tilted to the right (as you sit in the vehicle looking at the back of the engine). The tilt is required so the OM617 oil filter housing can clear the bulkhead on both the 90 & 110 and the Series IIA & III. This is why these custom pans will not work in a Jeep wrangler or Land Cruiser. Get lots of inquiries from those owners who want an oil pan.
