Mercedes OM617 Powered 110 Build Up

The starting vehicle:
1986 110 with 2.5 liter Petrol engine, leaking fuel tank, and interior and under hood area covered in carpet and other sound deadening material.

Purchased from a UK dealer. It was used by DRA for flight testing of countermeasures equipment. Unique in that it had 44,500 miles and was without front vents presumably to cut down on noise and interference.

Cleaning the chamber was the biggest pain in the ass on this job

Almost done installing them.

I would like to wrap up tonight and give a test fire. Hoping these smooth out the idle and clean up the smoke a bit.

great work as usual Don!

out of curiosity, how did you clean the chambers?

Thanks!

Combination of paper towels wrapped around a screwdriver and Q-tips dipped in acetone. The Q-tips worked the best but I used about 10 each chamber!

Btw - got it done and a quick start in the garage. A little smoother running but not a huge difference. Still throwing some exhaust smoke. But I feel like I need to take it for a good run and have get to operating temps to see for sure if the new injectors helped or not.

nice Don - just thought I'd check to see what others did

i used a paper towel as well, sans screwdriver, acetone and q-tips :)
Did you have a chance to run it down the road today, Don? Fingers crossed for you!
Where'd ya fins the 315's, be next on my bucket list
Has anyone completed this on a RHD defender 110? I just bought one and it appears the alternator does not fit due to the steering box. Thoughts
I have completed it - no issues with alternator clearance.

Any chance you can post a pic? The alt fan won't clear the steering box. Also, the engine fan will hit the box as well.
This is the best I could do... Lots of room to spare though...

Please post some pictures of your install because your interference statements are incorrect no disrespect intended, probably a bogus install if the kit came from me.
Not only does the alternator fit, but am also told the stock AC compressor fits the RHD as well.
Get an electronic fan,
I went with the taurus fan kit,
The fan sets too far back unless you're moving the radiator back to it,
For the fan to work properly it has to be very close
Good input, Howard!
Who?
Thanks!

Most 617s haze cold.

Hazing hot at idle, not so good.

I'm assuming the valves are adjusted and you have confirmed pump and cam timing.

If compression is pretty equal, within 20psi or so cold, closer hot) and pump and cam timing are right it might be time to get a pump built for it. I might have a 85 core laying around.
Don, mine will run soooooooo much better after a long 5 hour trip, don't know why, but it seems to be the trick

Still no real time with it yet. Was redoing my hood and while at it starting to redo some wiring. Hoping this time next week I'll get it out for a solid run.

I got them from Greazzer on PeachParts/SuperturboDiesel - great guy to deal with.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like you have a lot of experience with this engine.

The valves were adjusted a few months ago by a local Euro shop that has had done them way back when W123 300TD's were owned and driven by local people.

I have not confirmed pump and cam timing and need to check compression as well. That will be my next steps and will most likely go to a garage that has experience with it as it is probably outside my skill range.

I am tossing around getting a new IP with bigger plungers. Costly but scrubs said it really woke up the OM617.

Thanks Scrubs - I really need to just get this out on the road for extended periods.

BTW - what M pump plungers did you get. There is a guy from Portugal selling M Pumps on STD and he offers 6, 7.5 or 8mm.

I just asked for the 7.5mm treatment, wouldn't go back at all n stick with "The Wizard" he knows his stuff

Oh, if irrc, he only will do 8mm on MW pumps, we figured that was more than what I was looking for
Took the truck out for a good 60 mile round trip today to stretch its legs. It pulled well through mixed country roads, interstate and a good 2 mile climb over Storm King.

And then it broke down in my neighborhood.

It's showing symptoms of fuel starvation and I'm seeing bubbles in the fuel line between the primer pump and the IP itself. After the breakdown I was able to restart and limp it home by remaining in first gear medium to high revs. Once I shifted to 2nd and the engine came under load it stalled again. I wasn't able to do much diagnosis after getting home because it was dark. Tomorrow I'll start looking at:
-Vapor lock
-fuel line crack
-fuel filters
-shutoff solenoid function (may be losing power)

All that being said, I was most impressed finally getting her out on the interstate where it was relatively flat. She cruised great at 65-70. Honestly 5th gear is too tall with this 1.2 and I really only used it on downhills to reduce revs at 70mph. I really see this setup having few limitations once it is properly mated with a 1.4 LT230.
