Mercedes OM617 Powered 110 Build Up

The starting vehicle:
1986 110 with 2.5 liter Petrol engine, leaking fuel tank, and interior and under hood area covered in carpet and other sound deadening material.

Purchased from a UK dealer. It was used by DRA for flight testing of countermeasures equipment. Unique in that it had 44,500 miles and was without front vents presumably to cut down on noise and interference.

We pretty much have the same stuff left... But you are one step ahead of me because you have a downpipe. I'm going to try and find someone to do at least the first bend and a flex pipe this weekend!
I just used the stock Merc one - any chance you can source one of them? I did have to mod the bottom of the DP and increased the OD to 2.5"

I may go back at some time and do a true 2.5" DP tho.
I'm dead set on doing an immediate expansion to 3" right after the flange. I figure I'll appreciate the extra flow as I start to tune her!
Dave:
I buy mandrel bent pipe from an exhaust supply and then weld up my own exhaust systems.
Be sure and add a flex joint so it doesn't rattle.
The Mercedes muffler is ideal.

Haha - I like that idea. Well - if I end up doing the DP over I might have to do the same!

If you can post up what you are doing about the air intake - trying to figure out a clean setup. Was going to go the stock Merc air filter canister but things are tight with the heater box and windshield washer canister.
Any of you guys have pics of your throttle setup?

I bought an NAS 90/110 throttle cable and was going to run it straight to the main IP lever but found it won't be able to use the kill/STOP feature. I still have the valve cover Merc linkage but was seeing if there were some simple options.

Parts for intake are on the way. Will post photos of the mockup if it works and will let you know what parts I used.

Haven't delved into the accelerator cable yet. Just been too busy.
Pics in route, share if u like
please share don!
Robert, your 75mph speeds--is that with the boot on the throttle? Curious what you get at a comfortable throttle input.

That's with stock IP and your foot in it, but not all the way down to the floor.
Thanks for uploading the pics Robert - was a busy day yesterday.

Here is a pic of mine after some fiddling last night:

I can get the STOP to engage but it seems the throttle side doesn't have much. I took the bolt out of the accelerator pedal so it has full travel.

Might just have to start it and see how it revs/feels.

Don, took a bit to figure the full travel on the IJ pump, when figured out ran just fine.

Pretty sure we talked via email last year about it ;-)

I remember now - will look up those emails. I'll have to fiddle with it once I am done with the rest of the build.
Looks good. The issue with mine is the return spring on the IP Is useless. Going to either replace it and see if it helps, or more likely going to have to rig up a return spring up on the valve cover. Does your accelerator/throttle spring back to the stop position?

In other news, went back out today to fire up the engine just for kicks and it was the fastest and smoothest starting diesel I've ever been around. Can't wait to get this thing rolling.
Dave - my throttle goes back. Gave her a test fire last night and the throttle felt pretty good. It will need to be fine tuned but for now I will it as is so I can finish all the other little items.

That stop is a manual shutoff that isn't needed when you connect up the vacuum shut-off button.

When revved off idle, the engine sounds like a V8 gasser...
My conversion is practically complete...

So naturally on a recent test-start I noticed exhaust coming from the heater output (no coolant added yet).

Everything I know tells me this is a head/head gasket issue. Awesome.

Truck idles, revs fine. But has never been run under load or more than 60 seconds.

So now it's a matter of deciding if I finish the install and attempt to drive... Or go backwards 6-12 months and start with a different engine.

Sorry to hear. Sure it's not a loose downpipe and exhaust just coming thru?

If it's the head/head gasket it shouldn't be too crazy of a job. Do you know the mileage on the motor?
