Weak underpowered thirsty engine coupled to an industrial transmission.

As an owner of an '86 with the same setup, I agree. But still great fun to drive. You can change the carb/throttle body for an Edelbrock to get a little more oomph, or to Holly Sniper fuel injection, but you're still not gonna win any drag races.

Your power is up into the rpm’s prob farther than you think. A decent Rover V8 should be would up pretty good before shifting.

Also ensure you engine is properly tuned/timed/maintained to get the most out of it.

I have the same setup, + Edelbrock . No real complaints about the power actually not quite a fair comparison as my engine has had some tweaks too, but it will easily get to 80 on the flat.
The LT85, hm yes its agricultural, really very noisy. I my LT95 (4 speed) felt more refined! swapped out for the 85 when my clutch failed.
