Anyone have a reference on replacing the front shocks in Defender?

Do I just pull the tower caps off and yank em up through there, or do I have to dislodge the spring or something?

It's just like you thought:
1) take off the plastic covers on the inner wing.
2) unbolt the turrets. Take care, the nuts have a tendancy to shear off!
3) unbolt the damper from the bottom mounting(use a pipe wrench to stop the damper rotating).
4) pull the whole lot up through the inner wing.
5) put the turret in a vice and release the top of the damper from the turret.
Assembly is the reverse of disassembly.
Use plenty of releasing/penertrating fluid on the four turret bolts and the damper bolts and all should be well. The top bolt on the damper may need some localised heat or in the worst case a good 'seeing to' with an angle grinder to remove it from the damper turret. The shape of the turret holds all sorts of mud and water up there for ever.
While you've got the turrets off inspect them closely for rust around the top. It's not unknown over here in damp England for the top of the turret to rust out and the damper to punch through the inner wing cover plate.
If you replace the standard turrets with tubular ones you won't have to take the turrets off again next time you want to swap the dampers.

If the nuts sieze up, don't forget the smoke wrench (propane, mapp, etc) so you don't break anything. When I replaced my shocks the first time, I bought new "bolt rings" (the things holding the turrets on) and used copper anti-sieze when I put the new rings on. Repalced the shocks 2 times since and no problems.

Waxoil rust prevention fluid works really well too to stop things seizing up. I swear by the stuff:grin

There's nothing quite like a bushing on fire to send the neighbors running to help. :grin

I was working on my father-in-law's car once and had to use the smoke wrench (mapp gas) to get the nut off and caught the bushing on fire. The neighbors called the fire department. I put the fire out and was just getting the nut off when the fire trucks pulled into my driveway. Turns out fireman like beer.

Welding, that's another good one for setting stuff on fire. I had the inside of the chassis well on fire whilst welding, liquid burning waxoil rust proofing dripping out the drain holes that caused a fair bit of dancing about I can tell you:demented
