Corrected. The engine I am building has the zues drive, I am ditching it.

In theory it would be a good idea. Unfortunately the gear sets that were built by Zeus where of a low quality and have a very high failure rate.

Great on paper, however the design was flawed. As the stock system is a dry belt system the gears never recieved proper lubrication, also the gears were a spur design causing them to be noisy. To make it worse the mounting of the idler gears was weak and caused total engine failure. The belt design is currently reliable and can hold for the power. On top of that the company went under, according to sources.

So here is what I am working towards:

200TDI fire ringed head, Head studs, New pistons and rings, Mod the pump, new belt drive, T25/28 hybrid turbo, Larger front mount intercooler

Water/meth injection will keep down the egt's.

I really want to mess with the injection timing as most inline diesels come factory with very mild timing.
The 200 TDI is of weak design regarding the bridge between the valves, so you might want to use a 300 TDI head.

Would like to know how the TDI fire ringed head works out.
The LR TDIs are famous for head gasket issues and this may be easy to accomplish and start a trend for more miles between blown head gasket changes.
Hope there are no weaknesses that result from the machine work.

Please keep us updated on the fire ringed head.

On a cummins fire ringing , and O ringing (a .030 stainless steel wire imbedded in a groove cut into the head) work well.

I did compound turbos and o ringed the head on a friends truck. It could fall on its face up hill at 70mph and recover boost simply by rolling into the throttle. 0>>>50PSI in a few seconds.

The fire ring and O ring act as a buffer to protect the head gasket from combustion pressure.

Most larger diesels use the liner as a fire ring. The head sits on the liner and the HG seals the water/oil passages....

Impressive numbers...
Yes familiar with concept use on other engines, but not with that much boost.
Will be interested to see how the 200 TDI does with fire ringing.

Has anyone messed with water/methanol injection on the tdi's?
Yes! Set up a 50/50 methanol distilled water misting set up directly into intake manifold via intercooler discharge pipe 1 month ago....No increase in economy and inlet temps actually went up slightly. Most likely due to water mist displacing air/ oxygen content. Rerouted the misting to in front of the intercooler. Much better results.

Yes. End result was an actual loss of power and reduced economy as the atomized water/ methanol misting at around 20 bar directly into the intake manifold via the intercooler discharge line actually displaced required O2 into the cylinders. Intake temperatures actually increased while misting, monitored with therm on intake pipe. I ended up just rerouting to have the water misting in front of the intercooler instead which gave me a 2-4 degree C reduction on intake temps rather than removing the whole set up.

Actually yes....the one and only plus was that my exhaust was completely decarbonized :)
But overall it just doesn't work. At least not a small 2.5 turbo diesel.
Misting the cold water directly onto the front of the intercooler produces better results, not great, but going up long hills in aDefender every little bit helps.
The other comment I have on this post are sections where guys claim over 30mpg combined running!
Had my 90 over 20 years now and it's very well maintained engine wise.
I've never got better than 8.5 Kms to the liter, even when nursing it and mild acceleration/ keeping turbo boost below .5 bar. Think that's about 22/23 miles to the gallon.
How someone can claim 30mpg plus is a complete mystery to me :)

Being the air pressure in the “tires” up lol

all jokes aside, if anything I would keep the water setup as a weekly cleanup maintenance thing. Specially when not getting to highway speeds and just driving a lot in town. Keep it all clean in there.
Misting the intercooler definitely works. Halo units are great for that. Even some manufacturers are no using AC compressors to cool the intercoolers beyond atmospheric

Yup, I've left the push connect and the misting nozzle in place on the intercooler discharge hose for exactly that :)
