GM - Chevy 250 Engine Conversion

Starting a separate thread on the 230 & 250 inline 6-cylinder engine conversions.
This engine conversion will bolt in and out of a 90/119/130 without vehicle modifications, like the 292 making it an easy, inexpensive weekend conversion.
Since the 230 and 250 blocks are 2" shorter than the 292, and the ancillary mounts are different, this thread should eliminate any confusion with the 292.

Why convert?
The performance and ease of conversion are remarkable and well-suited to a Defender-style vehicle.
After driving small diesel for over 15 years and having to deal with high maintenance and poor performance coupled with reliability issues it was time for something better.
We built conversions for the Diahatsu 2.8 TD, the Iveco 2.8 and 3.1 TDI, and the OM617, and drove Land Rovers with 200 and 300 TDI engines.
These mechanical diesel are generally loud and smoky while the GM inline 6 is smooth and so quiet, you often don't hear it idling or driving.

The Chevy 250 was used in cars, trucks, and vans, and had many industrial uses being manufactured from 1962 to 1990.
A good used GM inline 6-cylinder engine typically sells for under $500 and is usually less than $250.
The cam is driven by metal timing gears eliminating the need to change a timing belt or timing chain.
The GM High Energy Ignition (HEI) systems are extremely reliable and were used on military vehicles without issue when submerged.
Parts are inexpensive with over-the-counter support from any local parts store.

There were several different versions of the 250 engine with different cylinder heads.
Some of the heads had a separate bolt-on manifold, while other versions had the inlet manifold integrated into the head casting.
Both versions will fit into a 90/110/130 using our conversion kit.

If you want Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI), the Holley Sniper is a good choice.
We will be working out the details for the Sniper as we did for the 292 conversions.

The other deciding factor was the accessibility to the engine and all the components.
Everything is within easy reach making for much shorter work intervals.
I timed changing a starter with hand tools which took 12 minutes.

With HEI and EFI, the only maintenance is changing the oil along with the rare wires, plugs, cap, rotor, and air filter renewals.

We will be offering kits as soon as they are manufactured.
As of the date of this post, we are waiting on the engine adapter castings to be machined, which hopefully won't take much longer.

The loud neighbors exhaust could have been fixed with a potato in the exhaust pipe.

too much work, what’s wrong with a rebuilt Rochester? They are on every 250,000 mile inline out there! Worked on the early 60s - 70s base muscle cars.
It came from the factory with EFI and a coil pack from 95 to 98. So there’s no extra work needed. Solid state coil packs often last the life of the vehicle. The coil packs on my E30 are over 30 years old.

Here’s a sale ad for an EFI 250 from a Silverado. The coil pack mounts to the side of the engine (2nd photo).


I also found some info on the differences between the Omega and Silverado engines. The Silverado engine produces less HP, but more torque and at a lower RPM. So the Silverado truck version would be the one you’d want for the Defender.

“Omega: 168hp and 29.1Kgf at 4500 RPM
Silverado: 138hp and 30.7Kgf at 2500 RPM”

(That’s 210 lb*ft for the Omega and 222 lb*ft for the Silverado.)

Yes south of the US border, but you'd have to get all the components there and figure out how to separate the controller to use them here.

Vendo um motor GM 4.1MPFI da Silverado...

Motor completo...

Comprei o motor aberto e com cabeçote trincado (sem saber).

Foi feito:
Troca do cabeçote por um novo (zero mesmo);
Troca de velas;
Troca de filtro;
Suporte e calços novos;
Correia;
Revisão do alternador;
Troca da bomba d´agua;
Troca de oleo;
Juntas;

E mais algumas coisas que não me lembro...

Entre a compra do motor e fazer tudo isso.. Gastei mais de 5,5k...

Quero hoje 4,5k

I think the "O" key must be completely worn bare on every keyboard in Brazil.

Is that an automatic bellhousing with TC?
Brazilian Chevy inline 6 to ZF HP22 automatic setup.
Belhousing fits Chevy 250.

Good point.
The Chevy 250 is bullet proof.
The engine has maintenance free metal timing gears and is 100% reliable.
As such, there aren't any timing chains or belts that need to be changed.
You guys may not know this tidbit: GM sold the older version of the Chevy inline 6 cylinder engine to Toyota.
That's right, the inline 6 that ended up in the Land Cruiser was the earlier Chevy engine with manual valve adjustment.
When Chevy came out with the larger displacement hydraulic lifter engine, they sold the older version to Toyota.

Did you also know that Rover V8 owners are swapping their distributor to GM Delco HEI?
Why?
Because it is reliable.
The same reliable distributor that is used on the Chevy 250, albeit for the 6 instead of an 8 cylinder.

My question is: does the Chevy 250 make enough HP? Can I cruise in 5th gear on the hyway, up hill at 5000+ feet on a hot summer day into a head wind (without collecting a large line of cars behind me)?

Way faster and more capable than my 19j. I have a video of hitting 40 mph here.

For anyone who's interested, here's how the Australians do it:


The Australian (Holden) version of the Chev 6 complete with Series Land Rover adapter. Note that Holden relocates the distributor farther down the block, to give greater clearance to mount accessories, but that the lower rad hose still sits right in the way.

Yes the Aussies, South Africans, and Americans in USA have been mounting the Chevy inline 6 in series vehicles for years. Think I am the only one that has developed a complete bolt in kit to put the Chevy 230. 250 and 292 into a Defender.

Installed by newly built motor this week. I’m very excited. I thought I would share completely rebuilt. Long block board 60 over balanced with new everything head was rebuilt by my engine builder Porsche specialist, but hey, the defender deserves the best.

I built a custom air in take system Mercedes A MG filter assembly. radiator and grill assembly goes back in tomorrow. The best part is that I have the entire air condition compressor and Bracket set up.

engine, I’ll have some more info later on. Besides 60 over on the cylinders, what did you do to the head, just curious what were you looking to do with engine Increase HP and torque. Let me know

I have only test fired it. will break in on Sat

I lucked out on a rebuilt blueprinted short block for a great price.
Head:
The head was decked, 3 angle valve job, new springs, guides and seats. New style helical valve seals Port matched to the gasket.
Intake/Exh:
292 2.5" outlet exh manifold, 1968 intake port matched to the gasket. Fuel pressure regulator set to 3 psi
Add ons:
Power master alt 150 amp, tough stuff high flow water pump, Ac delco fuel pump & Oil pump, D.U.I distributor with MSD wires A/C delco plugs gap to 50

Buy the Chevrolet inline 6 power manual it is a big help.

My main goal was to get a smooth reliable engine. I will run my rebuilt Rochester.

Just a note

The gentleman in the picture is not Robert. That is my farmhand Dookie, although he sort of looks like Robert, he is a skinny version of Robert from Trinidad.

Today will be the first start up and breaking of the motor. Very excited.

The power manual is the 2nd edition?…..what is your anticipated Hp and torque…being 60 over you did change ythe cam ? It looks like you’ll be breathing better with the modified head….and how did the break in go on Saturday

This is where I’m at on the 250 I’ll get the head and intake in 2weeks and I’ll be able to fire it up in..looking forward to it

Not really sure how much power. I was told I should get 12-15% power increase over what a stock 68 Camaro would put out.
