Flasher relay for LED blinker lights

I have ordered LED replacement lights for the dash lights and the exterior lights from superbrightleds.com. Should get the delivery today. I know I will need a flasher relay for the blinkers. Does any one know a source and part number for the needed relay. The ECR replacement light package comes with this relay, but I am trying the DIY route.

I will post the part numbers on the lights once I find out what works.

thanks

Same place you bought the bulbs have the flasher.
Reese,

Thinking of doing the same to my 110. I am having a hard time trying to figure out what bulbs will work for what too. Please do list the sizes and applications when you get a chance. I thought they were all T10's. Thanks
X2.

If you could list what dash/exterior bulbs work that would be great. Planning to order some as well.

I have a 1997 D90. I think the parts might be different on earlier models, especially the gauges. I ordered this all from superbrightleds.com

Exterior:
count / location / part # / comments
4 Front Parking & Signal, Amber 67-A9
the Rear Signal might be better for front blinker (#1156-A24 wide), see below
2 Front side marker, Amber WLED-A6
2 Rear side marker, Red WLED-R6
2 Tail/brake, 1157-R24 wide
2 Rear Signal, 1156-A24 wide
1 Back up (reverse), 1156-W24 wide
2 License Plate, White BA9S-W4-12V
1 Flasher Relay for LED, CF13GL-02
this is so the LED flasher lights will work for blinkers; I think you just need one.

Interior:
count / location / part # / comments
2 Fuel & Temp, WLED-G6
1 Tach, 74-GHP3 or 74-GHP
I just ordered this today so I am not sure it fits yet
2 Speedo, B8.5D-G
1 Dome light, 1156-cw18-t

I put all these in last night (except the tach and flasher relay) and they work. The dash lights are 100% improvement. They are all green like the original stock color but you can choose other colors.
The exterior lights are really not that big of a difference from the old bulbs.

Thanks Reece!

***i installed the relay and the flashers dont work ***
More investigation is needed.
OK, so yesterday i put in the new led flasher relay and all 4 blinkers blinked at once when the left or right blinker was activated. It was not the super rapid rate like before i put in the new relay. Instead, it was the normal blinking rate like when your hazards are activated.

I put the conventional bulbs back in the front blinkers and everything works. I assume that maybe the smaller led bulbs that i ordered for the front blinkers were not drawing enough power and the system thinks a bulb is burned out. At this point i may order a couple more bulbs to play with it, but at least its all working with all lights are now led except the front blinkers.

Does anyone out there know what might be going on here? Is there a separate relay for the front blinkers??
Both of these work for the Tach, 74-GHP3 or 74-GHP. The 74-GHP3 is better, it has 3 LEDs. These also fit the bulbs for the heater and blower on each side of the dash. See picture attached for all the gauges replaced with LED. Its actually much brighter than the picture.

Thanks Reese. Great info here. I've been looking to change my whole tail lights for quite some time. I am sick of replacing bulbs. I seem to pop them every couple months. I like the ECR replacement LED housing, but the price has turned me off.
So you are saying that leaving conventional bulbs in the front and using just the LEDs in the back and using the replacement relay seem to be working alright?
Stupid question but can any tell me why we have to replace the relay anyway. Aren't the replacement LEDs the same voltage as the original bulbs?
Thanks.
They draw next to no current and will cause your normal flasher to think that a bulb is out so you get the rapid flash.

Yes, I have the conventional bulbs in the front blinkers, LED in the back and everything is working with the new relay.
Reese your gauges look nice and bright.

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread but I have question.

I posted this on another thread but wasn't getting any bites so...

"Ok, so I have the above LEDs installed in the gauges/dash. Here's the problem.

I have one LED left to put in (the defroster), all new LEDs are shining bright, turn off the dash lights to go grab a drink, come back about 5 minutes later, turn on the dash lights and they aren't working anymore. Head lights work, no fuses blown, no loose connections in immediate view. Why would they work one minute then decide not to the next? Could this be a bad relay?

I put the existing bulbs back in and still nothing, the whole dash is dark.

Thanks
Wes

I would think its a fuse or a short in a wire. Check the wires going to the gauges, maybe one was cut or the insulation was scraped off when you were replacing the bulbs.
No, I don't think you have a short.

I just went through the same ordeal that you're going through. I tried the stock LR flasher relay, the relay from SuperBrightLeds.com (which appears to be the same as the ECR model) and finally, a cheap-o model from Autozone.

Here's what I found:

- Stock relay + LEDs = blinkers that flash too quickly. This is because the flasher IC inside the relay has lamp-out detection and the LED's decreased current draw triggers this.

- Superbrightleds.com's relay + LEDs = both sides blink simultaneously, as if your hazard lights are on.

- AutoZone relay + LEDs = one click and then nothing

- AutoZone relay + LEDs in front and incandescents in the rear = everything works normally.

I finally went back to incandescent turn signal bulbs in the rear to get everything working again. Using the autozone relay and everything works pretty much. The only thing that still doesn't work is that the indicator in the binnacle doesn't light up when my hazard lights are engaged. The lights blink properly and I hear the relay but there's no binnacle indicator.

BTW: the 24-LED 1156/1157 model in your parts list is the incorrect bulb for the rear lamps. The socket is mounted transversely, so you want a bulb that shines on its sides. You want the "tower" bulbs. Here's what I used:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-...tion=DispPage&Page2Disp=/specs/1156-x18-T.htm

You might even try the more powerful version:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-...tion=DispPage&Page2Disp=/specs/115x-x45-T.htm

One last thing: I found that the "warm white" bulb is the perfect bulb for the reverse lamp. It doesn't look like a cheesy blue-white LED.

I think he's referring to Wes's problem.

As far as this flasher issue with the LEDs goes, why don't you measure the resistance of the incandescent bulbs and get a resister (or multiples in series at add up to the right resistance or something close to it) from radio shack and add it to the circuit?

Thanks Charles,
I was thinking the same thing. Superbrightleds.com sell a resistor for $5 each. They recommend one per blinker. I will order a couple and see if it works.

This is the one I used. I got the "wide" version. It seems to work fine and its $10 less expensive each. I used one similar to the one you suggested for my dome light.

Did you install the resistors? Is the flasher issue resolved now?

Isn't it possible to use a white bulb for the side markers?

Just put the resistors in. They did the job. Truck is fully LED now.

You could probably do white lights in all the locations actually.
