I noticed the Trackabout off road camper trailers in OutdoorX4 magazine and it got me thinking what it would entail to build one DIY.

I noticed there are companies that make rooftop tent racks for the military M1101 trailer. Maybe that would be the best budget option?

I found this thread where someone put a Defender HiCap bed on a Wolf Sankey trailer. Something like that would be great to make it match the Landy.

Or make a teardrop camper from Chesapeak Light Craft. I've made two of their boats, for which they are well known. The camper is rad. Just put it on a burly trailer....

The Humvee trailer is great but doesn't match Defs. Rooftop tents can be made to fit any trailer. The Sankey is the ticket, the track, width, deck height and tires same as a DEF's. Not sure the heavy rust prone steel tub is worth using for a camper conversion. Although of simple leaf spring straight axle design, it's good enough to follow a DEF practically anywhere. A standard pickup bed will also fit a Sankey. It's not necessary to reverse the bed as in the thread on the link. A spare and 2 Jerrycans mounted up front give positive tongue weight when empty. Adjust load/design to keep it that way.
Camper trailers are expensive. With a DIY build, you end up with something tailored to your needs.

Thank you for the info. I don't know very much about the Sankey trailers, but from some quick research it appears they are hard to find now. It looks like the replacement is the Penman. Those have the round 95mm lights like a NAS Defender. That would be a great match. :) Of course having one shipped over from the UK would cost a lot more than a local Humvee trailer.

Penmans may be too new to import, but would be a great basis. Tub is stainless so may be worth keeping.
There are Sankeys out there.
I've towed trailers on the trail and one that's wider than the tow vehicle changes things for the worse.
What does a Humvee trailer sell for these days?

Before the gov started releasing them, the manufacturer offered them at $7k. A few years ago I bought an unused one from gov planet for $700. For towing behind a Hummer/Humvee it's worth every penny.

I just realized Canada probably has the Land Rover trailers. Quite a few Penman trailers from 2004 have sold on GCSurplus and a Sankey from 1980. I didn't realize trailers have to meet the vehicle requirements for importation. I guess we'll have to wait a while for the Penmans.

Have the unique tub from a Rapier 130 missile carrier. It’s setup for a platform over loadspace & has side entry locker doors for space under the platform. Whole thing is double wall aluminum. Found that an American camper top fits on top of bed rails. Got an aluminum one for a work truck with side lift up doors. Have a single axle aluminum I beam boat trailer that needs to be cut down to work. That’s as far as I’ve gotten. Uber light all aluminum and 6x8 sleeping platform. A 270 awning and drop down table & she’d be great. Getting too old for rtt ladder in the middle of the night to p.
