Digital Speedometer From RN, Does it work if my cable is toast?

1813 Views 44 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Z.G
My 94 NAS 90 speedometer has finally stopped working completely. I don't mind this so much, because i can't go over any speed limit in it anyway! But it does create the problem of an inaccurate odometer. I was thinking of replacing it with the new RN digital speedometer kit (RNDSKIT2). But how does it work? will i need to replace the speedo cable?

For posterity, I was an early adopter of the RN Speedo kit and I love it. it was an easy install for a 96 ROW TDI and the instructions were probably the best I've seen of any kit.
It should work perfectly in a normal ROW application. I believe OP has a NAS 90 he is trying to get the kit to work in, and the drivetrain in my truck is all late GEMS NAS. The RN kit is great, but to get it to work with a NAS application, some modifications are needed.

The VDO speedo speed sensor input is actually quite sensitive and the 95NAS sensor is just a reed switch and a rotating magnet. When the vehicle is stopped unless you just manage to stop exactly on the point where the sensor switch contact is closed, the speedo input is connected to a long floating antenna which is the vehicle wiring so you probably pick up all kinds of stuff. A capacitor to ground might help"

I would love to try that if I new what a capacitor was!!!! I've got some reading to do. BTW, other than this, the speedo is awesome. It looks factory, keeps accurate speed, easily programmed and calibrated and adjusted. AND it is bright enough at night that I can actually see it. I'll give it 5/5 stars because I know the issue I'm dealing with is outside the purview of the vehicle this was actually designed for. Seriously awesome product!

I'll see if he can suggest a specific capacitor to install and let you know

We are currently moving forward with developing the full kit for NAS vehicles and will have a full solution soon!
