Digital Speedometer From RN, Does it work if my cable is toast?

1841 Views 44 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Z.G
My 94 NAS 90 speedometer has finally stopped working completely. I don't mind this so much, because i can't go over any speed limit in it anyway! But it does create the problem of an inaccurate odometer. I was thinking of replacing it with the new RN digital speedometer kit (RNDSKIT2). But how does it work? will i need to replace the speedo cable?

It does not use a cable. It is electronic. You can grab a signal from the existing VSS. I assume RN provides instructions.

If you can’t speed in a V8 Defender something is seriously wrong.

Thanks! Yes, I can speed, I guess I just don’t care anymore whether I am speeding!
I just attempted to install the Rovers North digital speedometer. BIG waste of time. I removed the old speedometer, put in the new one, wired it up, removed the old speedometer cable from the transfer case. Then I tried to put the new transducer in... IT DOESN'T FIT! The square male end is too large for the gear in the transfer case. No problem, right? They must have known this was a possibility, and they must have a reasonable workaround, right? Nope. The most logical thing in the universe would be to include multiple male ends to the transducer. Nope. They recommend now buying a new gear for the female end inside the transfer case to solve the problem. Does this seem ridiculous to anyone else? I've already spent $500 on this thing, now I need to spend $37.41 more, plus shipping, plus waiting who-knows-how-long to get the part. And how do I know that part will fit? And then I need to somehow remove the female gear from my transfer case and replace it? HOW ON EARTH IS THAT THE SOLUTION? I am so flaming mad about this. More time, more money, and the least efficient or logical fix I can imagine. Bonkers.

There are a number of annoying variations on transfer case bits and fittings. I wish some supplier would organize their stuff so that you could tell what you needed but even Ashcroft just shrugs at the problem. Fortunately for me, I’ve always had the “too big” problem (natch…) so I’ve just removed a little material from the square end and called it good. I’ve had good luck replacing the drive gears even though they’re kinda stuck in there behind the parking brake.
I’m confused. You have a NAS truck. It already has a VSS. You can simply take the signal from it that goes to the EFI ECU. You should not need to install a direct mount VSS. If you are installing the Hall effect one then your EFI will not have a speed signal and this causes issues.

You have just created the JLRNA summer ad campaign! Bravo!

Yeah, that kit is not intended for a NAS truck. It is for the “Early vehicles without ECU”

Yep. I probably should have cooled off a little more before posting my rage. So… I’ll order the other part and put it in this week and I’m sure I’ll live the new Speedometer. In other exciting news, the new galvanized half-doors from SP4x4 arrive next week!
But hang on. You don’t want to install that Hall effect sender. You will lose the speed signal to the EFI and get a constant code and idling issues.

So I just need to go back to the old school cable driven speedo?

Your d90 should have 14cux injection correct? I just had a similar issue getting the RN kit to work on my V8 (but I needed to complete 1 extra step because mine is a gems). Your 90 should have a small box with a cable going to the t-case mounted to the frame. This will have the speedo cable and an electronic speed output that goes to the ecu. You can wire the rn kit in by simply splicing into the electronic output of your factory speed sensor. ( don’t cut the ecu signal off, you need to split the signal and power wires to feed the speedo, and the ecu) Take the same power and speed signal from the d90 speed sensor and ground the black wire. In the programming portion of the speedo, set the pulses to 8000. I hope this helps.

No. I’ve explained it twice. You tap into the speed signal from the current VSS and that will work for the speedo and the EFI.

You could have just bought the speedo and 8 pin plug for $130 and run some wires. You don’t need or want the Hall effect sender or any of the other stuff.
I hear you @Red90 ! It's just taking a long time to sink in. Sheesh, this is humbling. I'll give that a try today. Thanks so much!
I'm just curious about those sp4x4 half doors. I'm leaning towards them myself.. that or I just get puma doors. Lol

Have some experience with them. Best to measure doors to verify correct size (really), and dry fit all items to doors before paint. Quality product that may need some tweaks, best to do before all nice and shiny.

Now let’s get back to Red hammering on you! It is educational and entertaining!

Right! It took me back to residency! Getting scolded all day long! Again, this is what i love about this forum. I'll make myself look as stupid as i am a hundred times if it gets me to the point where I learn something and improve my defender and my knowledge base. It's humbling as heck!

LOL. I hear you. Sometimes its like that but I too learn a lot here.
Hope you and family have a great Easter, and hopefully see you at Nat’l Rally!

Sorry for any confusion, but yes as Red90 mentioned earlier, it's not designed for a NAS vehicle or anything 98+.

We are trying to come up with a kit for NAS vehicles so that the signal can go to the ECU as well, but nothing at this time

Nope, it's a classic case of me not reading (or understanding) the details.
