defroster rant

I love this truck just as much as you guys do, but seriously WTF with the defroster. Did the land rover engineers get too high that day? I'd better off riding my motorbike to work today.

HAHA!

Mudstuff UK makes the 'defender vent' to address this issue.

Dave at urban stocks them I believe
What specific year truck do you have? There were changes to the defroster design and the really old ones are not the best. Also, you need to make sure everything is working properly (heater matrix clean, lower vents closing, hot/cold flap sealing, defroster pipes connected....and so on.)

I have one and can't really recommend it especially at the price. The front defrost was fine before and not much different after. The side defrost on this design does nothing useful.

Good to know, best to spring for a cab heater at that price
I should add that also have a heater with double the airflow and three times the heat output of a standard heater. IMO, the side vents need separate ports into the lower dash to get enough airflow to be useful.
a goofy thing that may help..... [for NAS truck, not sure about 80's] the intake on the wing has a little fan that "sucks in the air" spray some lubrication on / in that and a lot of it and it will spin "free'er" and fast to have a better fan speed on the inside.

hope this makes sense!?! =)
Port matching the bulkhead to the heater will help. http://www.defendersource.com/forum/showthread.php?p=398262#post398262

Bingo. My defroster will literally blow your knickers off.
Once your cabin heater is done you wont have this problem.

right on
guess that's why they named it the defender and not the defroster
My windows don't fog up, I have so many drafts that I can't keep enough heat in it for them to fog
Jason, I'm going to do that fan upgrade after all. I want my knickers gone.
I may do this upgrade over the summer. Doesn't get that cold down here but more heat can't hurt

BUT...keep in mind I firmly believe it's the bulkhead cutout along with the fan that make the diffference overall.

I think it would still be good to show us what you have. If you have the early vents, changing to the later ones is a good idea...

From this to this is like night and day.

Good post Gary.
Never tried the opening adjustment, but will have to on my next ride.

From the past...
Defroster, you have a defroster???
In my day we use to have a Lucas 12V defroster that stuck to the windscreen with suction cups and plugged into the dash socket. It had 2 small heater strips that would clear about 1 inch above and below the unit. Those were the days in the MGYB and MGTD getting neck cramps from being hunched over trying to see through the little clear strips.

When it got too bad, the bottom of the YB windscreen cranked open and you could get some fresh air blowing through.

Then there were the times when the 12V strip ran the battery flat because you forgot to unplug it and you had to start the engine with the hand crank.
On a normal Defender (not sure about NAS), the vents in the lower dash are very restrictive, much more than the bulkhead hole. You can measure the size of both to understand.

The stock bulkhead hole is 4.5" x 3.25" = 14.6 square inches. The stock lower vents are 1.75" x 2.25" which gives 7.9" for both vents plus whatever is in the defroster vents. The fan inlet is 14 square inches.

Have you enlarged yours at all?
