New to the board, had my Check Engine light go on with 88. Checked the book and it says "#88 Purge Valve Leak". Looked in the Shop Manual and I know what it looks like. Checked the truck and no apparent leaks. Then tried the reset procedure and it does not clear. So...... is it "usually" the valve itself, or should I start going through all the lines with bubble solution? 93 NAS 110 with 91K Thanks to all in advance!

Code 88 - Purge Valve

Mike, Thanks for the post. The 88 code has specifically a "leak" parameter, so it would not be affecting the sensors (o2). Am I missing something?

What I mean is, the wires running to the sensors can become disconnected, and then the computer would show a code saying something is wrong. So just fallow the cable going to the sensor back to the ECM and make sure that nothing is unplugged or cut.

Flipped the Master Switch

I flipped the master and reset the box and the 88 code cleared. May be intermittent. Have to reset the stereo station presets now :(

You don't have to pull the batt.

From the FAQ section

Clearing the display:
1. Switch ignition on.
2. Disconnect serial link mating plug, wait 5 seconds, then reconnect.
3. Switch ignition off, wait for main relay to drop out.
4. Switch ignition on. The display should now be reset. If there are other faults, the next one will be displayed. Otherwise the display will be black
5. If there is more than one fault repeat steps 1 to 4, to clear each fault until the display is blank.

Michael, Tried that and it did not clear, but will try again should it still be a recurring issue. Thx Steve

You can also just pull off the main plug on the ECM with the engine off that way you don't loose your radio, that or I have a wire that goes from the radio to the Batt so when I disconnect everything else The radio will still be connected.

resurrecting this old thread.

Driving to work this morning the CEL came on.

I checked the code next to the ECU and its a code 88 - purge valve leak.

WTF - Looks like the part if it needs to be replaced is an arm and a leg. Any thoughts on what I can do to troubleshoot?

Thanks all!

Re-resurrecting an old thread. Anyone solve this issue? Had the Code 88 pop up a couple days ago. I disconnected battery and it went away, but I have to assume it will come back. Thanks very much.
