I'm considering adding AC in my Defender but wonder if its worth it ? I've heard mix opinions . Does anyone drive their defender regularly? I don't but worry about it loosing value if I start to. Heres an old off roading picture .

if it is a NAS then yes mileage will effect value more than a row
I'm guessing these will always hold value or continue to climb with only limited NAS #s being produced . I watch the BAT auctions and prices are all over the board even with high milage trucks . Will they continue to climb regardless as fewer will come on the auction block as they are being bought up? Not that I ever plan to sell any time soon but want to drive it more .

Drive it until the wheels fall off, then bolt them back on and do it again! I have my late Fathers 1971 Series IIA which he owned from new here in California now, I get a sense of pride driving it here with its original three bearing motor now with Holley fuel injection as it recently cleared a documented from new 460,000 miles!!

I'm going with that advice ! Lol Thank you! I do have a weird intermittent issue if anyone has experienced this. If I'm cruising along in 3rd or 4rth gear with traffic , every so often it will BUCK on me. Almost like it shuts down and regains power. In the 7 years I've owned it I've had this looked at and it seems as though temporary fixes such as cap and rotor fixed it but only for about 1000 miles or so. It happens intermittently but is scary when it does. Its a 3.9 manual . Anyone have any ideas?

Ignition components such as ignition control module and coil and their connections could cause bucking you describe.

personally I don’t think adding AC would devalue you truck. It was an option back in 94/95 I believe.
Thank you for the insight . I'll check it out .

I’ve had my 90 for almost 20 years and it’s been a daily driver from the very beginning. I don’t use the AC very often, but there is a day or two each summer when it’s nice to have. She’s got just under 200k miles and I’m irresponsibly accountable for 170k of them. Do what floats your boat, but by no means wait to enjoy where these things can take you and the good company you’ll likely be with.

Is it the original 3.9 gas motor with that many miles or is it a diesel? Impressive. I just can't seem to get this intermittent bucking fixed on mine. Have you taken it on long trips? I get nervous going out of my zip code . Lol

If you live in Virginia did you trailer the Land Rover Defender 90 there? If you drove a D-90 from Virginia to Colorado you got guts or youre a Land Rover tech. I took mine to the beach once and was a nervous wreck. Lol Would love to see more pictures!

I added AC to my NAS 94 and its definitely worth it in the summer - considering you have a SW it should be even more worth it.

Regarding mileage - if you have a truck with under say 50K miles then daily-ing it will cause it to lose value but if its got 100K+ on the clock just drive the hell out of it.

I daily drove this old thing for over twenty years - and its got over 400,000 slow, noisy, smelly miles on it of which I'm responsible for more than 200K.
I was asked to move it from out in front of the F-22 paint facility at work when we had a tour of Air Force Generals coming through, The management didn't think it reflected the high tech image we wanted to project. We are celebrating our 43rd anniversary together this year. When I replaced my Range Rover classic with my D90 the Defender became my primary driver for a few years.
Now the new 110 is the daily driver but I'm retired so my annual mileage has been drastically reduced.

I'm going to . I just hope it always maintains some value if if I run it up to 200,000 miles. Its lots of fun. I think these need to be driven .

This is a 97, which came with the 4.0L GEMS. She’s even running on all her original gaskets and seals. I take it everywhere, but for the Colorado trip I put it on a flatbed. I didn’t have the time to drive out and back, plus spend two weeks in CO. The key to these things, IMO, is drive them often and keep it filled with clean fluids. I’ve never used the high end fluids, just the basic stuff that is hopefully on sale at Autozone.

I chose to flatbed it out and back so I could spend more time in CO. I’ve done that trip before a few times and that’s enough. The 90 would have done fine but I would’ve been pretty tired on both ends.

I have a 97 110 with 23,000 original miles. I bought it as a daily driver and that is how it is used. I just wish it was Me driving. It is my wife’s daily driver. If you enjoy driving it. Use it. You can always restore it one day and keep driving it. Not to mention that it will hold it value better then the new car you by and drive.

Don't stress about these things. You SHOULD get to know your truck and be a mechanic for sure. I broke down three times on this trip, two of which had the same failure (brake master cylinder). But I met some wonderful people (many from this forum!) to help me along my way. This was with my ground-up 110 build with a 300TDI:

I've since swapped in a Cummins R2.8 and a 1.1 center transfer case and just did this trip earlier in the summer:

Don't be like Cameron's dad in Ferris Bueller's day off:

Cameron: Ferris, my father loves this car more than life itself.
Ferris: A man with priorities so far out of whack doesn't deserve such a fine automobile.
Cameron: No. No! Apparently, you don't understand!
Ferris: Wow.
Cameron: Ferris, he never drives it! He just rubs it with a diaper!

Who did your Cummins swap? I'd love that . You'll never break down! Post a pic if you can! My daily work Truck is a 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins 6 speed Manual. I have 3 of them. I've always been a car and truck guy but love cars that are tempermental for some reason. I drove a H1 Hummer for years but when they stopped making them it got tough to maintain . I much prefer my Defender but it has this intermitten issue with loosing power for a second and catching itself. Its weird. My beach place is 3 hours away and I'm to nervous to take it. Lol I've done it once in the 7 years I've owned it. I'm going to drive it locally more now that I've found this site and support. Thank you for responding to me
