Hello, All. An interested defender newbie here. Been a VW/porsche guy for a while, but my 993 recently went up in smoke. Literally. Search my user name on rennlist. So taking a closer look at defenders that I've admired for a while. Hated worrying about rock chips and scratches in my car, so maybe time for a change.

I have been reading up and perusing the defender ads far too much but have never actually been behind the wheel. So I am humbly asking if I could meet someone to take a drive. I would happily compensate you monetarily or with beer or free medical advice? Please PM me or email me if you have an hour or so to spare.

Free medical advice? That has so many possibilities....

Driving a defender is just like a 993 ... Minus the power, stopping ability, handling, build quality, reliability ...

It does however have a common ability to car-b-q on NAS trucks and attract the ladies with its rugged good looks.

In no-one is available locally visit NYC and you can try mine.

Alternatively drive a 50 year old tractor ... It's not much different.

Like most things worth doing defenders are an acquired taste. If you are willing to live without creature comforts and reliability then you'll love it. If you get upset when you get an oil drip on your marble driveway ... Look elsewhere.

Just to clarify, my driveway is made out of elephant ivory, not marble. Please. And the giant oil puke spot in my garage from the 911 is testament to my love of poorly sealed cars.

Rochester is terrible place to have a sports car. 1) The weather sucks and NY seems to own stock in road salt so I could only drive it 4 months out of the year. 2) I am not the wipe your feet before you get in my car type and I have two kids who have outgrown the 911 'back seats'. 3) Porsches in this town have some weird 'douche' reputation that I never heard the end of with my co-workers. 4) Cops seem to make their salary by pulling over motorists at random.

I've driven tractors, moving trucks, and early 70s Fords. Love 'em. Anything that rumbles and means business, I want to drive it.

I'm a surgery resident so when I say 'free medical advice', I mean it. And it's worth every penny.

If you don't have time to work on your own vehicle, life with a Defender will suck for you.

As a surgery resident, I'm assuming that your time is very limited. It might be a good vehicle to get once you get out of school. Being on call sucks...

I'm confused as to why your being so negative towards some one looking to get into Defenders

I know many a guy that don't turn wrenches and have happy lives with Defenders.

fair enough! Don't mean to be negative at all. Defenders are not cheap to maintain if you're not doing the work, however. It isn't intended as negativity...just realism.

Ok cool. I don't know anyone in Rochester but if you are in NYC on a Thursday evening we have a meetup and plenty of opportunity to play with trucks.

Do you have an idea about what you want? A 97 with slush box is probably the most luxurious... Although earlier models with a stick shift is a more rewarding and involved experience!

To be fair I really think it depends on what platform one starts with and how often it gets used( meaning more often the better). In my case I have been driving the same D90 on a daily basis for 11 years and I average 11-12k a year. I have raised three kids with it. Swim meets, baseball coaching, lax coaching, football practices, family trips. Its also not stock. I built mine with a goal of using it on and off the advanced trails and I'm pretty happy to say it has never let me down or stranded. I have limped home on one drive shaft a couple times though. It's as much as part of the family now as the dog and I'm not supposed to even think about selling it, even though I do fantasize about getting back to a white ST.

As for road salt, yes NY has stock. Located in the Ithaca area is a giant salt dome about the size of Everest.

If you have a garage and a way to rinse the truck off, then there's no reason not to own one even in the Lake Effect region. The secret is to let the truck dry and not allow salty water to sit and sit and do it's electron exchange thing.

You should buy Kent's red 110. It's a convicted felon and has done time in a Federal prison!

I bought my first defender 90 from my first medical gig in 94. 21 years later and a little more $$$$ later, the D is still my baby. I believe there are plenty of docs with them, unfortunately the good ones nowadays are more Attending price level than resident, but defenders and porsche look great in the physicians parking lot.

I am in Rochester... every weekend. well Williamson actually. I don't have a "real defender" you can sit (see my build thread) in but I can give you tons of pointers and any other info you may need to help you.

Leastonce had most things right.
I'd add that the noise in a Land Rover doesn't equate to speed or performance.
They don't accelerate rather they gather momentum.

Damn you, Voice of Reason! Reliability is important and I can't buy a basket case, but I find getting under a car to wrench is therapeutic. Hence the request to get a tour from a Defender veteran. Maybe I'll hate it, maybe I'll love it.

I've got my eye on the 80's D90s. We'll see if things shake out.

:thumb: I want a daily driver that will keep me interested and make me smile every time I see it in the parking lot. Most of my cars in the past fit this criteria. I want something I don't have to lock away half the year. I have some kid hauling to do as well. And when I showed my brood the D90s I was looking at they got pretty excited.

Supercharge has kindly offered to introduce me to his series rovers this weekend. A man among men.

I thought it was radiologists. They are all about sensory deprivation.

You should try reaching out to the Fingerlakes Rover Group. Jerry (who's in Fairport ) has a few S3's laying around and might have leads on a defender. Dave Johnson was running the group before I moved away.
