Hey guys, it's been a few years since I've posted. I'm now the proud owner of a former members 85 110 300tdi. I'm actually on the way to Utah after picking it up in Mass. However I'm now sitting in a Holiday Inn Express in Rawlins WY after having to get towed after this part blew it's brains out. I don't know how long it tried to hold on, but a big hill, 7K feet of altitude, 90 degrees and a good 9-11% grade finally did it in, and I near overheated. The temp gauge actually worked, and I got it pulled over in time to find someone one Labor Day to give me a tow. Sigh. It's been a very long day.

Anyway, I can find no good reason this part is needed, and that a plumbing y connector or something would do the same job, especially not have to wait for parts. Maybe you've even replaced yours after a similar issue?

Do you think I might find something at a autoparts store might work? If so, I'm curious what might work. I usually try and read everything I can before posting, but it's been a long day, and we still have miles to go.

What could work as a replacement that I might find at walmart/oreiley or truck stop, that's what I got...

I can not find much on this, this from another forum

"all the workshop manual in RAVE says this .
Two bleed pipes help control the system
pressure by purging excess air and coolant to the
expansion tank via the ’Y’piece ejector.

doesn't give any other info about it"

I can not see just fitting a "Y" piece connecting the 3 pipes will do harm, Do a good bleed of the system, even a D2 lift the header tank in air while the engine is running, would not hurt.

Get a brass 3 way from autoparts store or home depot, refill coolant, bleed correctly and be on your way. I believe 1/4" 3 way barbed union is fine. All 300 tdi owners need to keep one in their spares anyway. Greenbull on this forum runs brass no issue. The purpose of that plastic vulnerability is a collection point for air in the coolant to aid in self bleeding, so bubbles get trapped before going back to tstat housing.

Wish it was metal. Plastic parts in cooling systems suck.

Ps hopefully you killed engine before head gasket was compromised.

A 3 way 1/4" OD pipe Y or T shaped.
In a pinch, I'd even just plug all 3 ends with small bolts and hose clamps if I had to.
Like these guys say it just allows air to get back to the reservoir tank if there is any in the system, ( but I do keep a spare myself).

Thanks everyone for the replies. Managed to find a air breather 3way that worked to get us to our final destination. Ill post more about our 2,700 mile repositioning cruise as soon as i get all the photos and videos together. Amazing trip.
