This post is more for future reference by other users than it is a request for support or information.

I daily drive my 1996 110 station wagon. Last night on a trip from the western slope of Colorado to Colorado Springs my #1 injector pipe (STC1694) cracked at the injector nut and was spraying fuel while running.

I noticed a slight vibration increase while coming down Vail pass and a loss of power and was planning to stop in frisco for fuel anyway. When I popped the hood I saw the obvious problem. I limped the Defender to silverthorne and made it to Lowe’s before they closed. I was able to use a 1/4” brass compression fitting to get the pipe reconnected to the injector using the stock nut. The pipe had broken at the flange that mates with the injector.

My engine is now vibrating excessively, seemingly out of balance thanks to the repair. I suspect this is due to fuel delivery and have ordered all new injector pipes as well as a set of injectors (I had planned to do this anyway as my injectors are original).

While this is not a permanent fix I can confirm that a hardware store 1/4” compression sleeve will reconnect a broken injector pipe to the injector in an emergency. I was able to get to Colorado Springs and can still drive the truck. The vibration smooths out at higher rpm but obviously this is not ideal.

I’ll report back with an update as to whether or not new injector pipes and new injectors fixed the out of balance condition or if I permanently damaged any internal engine components as a result of continuing to operate my Defender. I expect parts to arrive in a couple of weeks as my supplier did not have the #2-4 injector pipes in stock.

I understand many others have experienced vibration related to u joints or driveshafts. I want to state clearly that this issue is not related to power transmission but rather occurs while the vehicle is parked as well as while moving.

If anyone else has had a similar experience I’m interested to see what you found as a result.

I’ve already got an update and a big endorsement for Rovers North. They’re overnighting a full set of injector pipes to my hotel and I’ll be pulling and cleaning the offending injector while I replace the pipes in the parking lot. They hand walked the parts to shipping for me to get them out today.

I can’t thank Rovers North enough or overstate what an enormous help they are!

Yes, this out of balance or excessive vibration is definitely being caused by a misfire. Specifically I would guess that the compression sleeve I used to reattach the broken pipe is blocking a majority of fuel from entering the #1 fuel injector.

My attempt here is to hopefully help others experiencing a sudden out of balance diesel engine or sudden 300Tdi excessive vibration / 200Tdi excessive vibration - that are less knowledgeable - by creating a record that search engines will access. Repeating the key words sudden excessive vibration and sudden out of balance diesel engine and 300tdi and 200Tdi should make this thread easier to find while parked on the side of the road.

My secondary purpose is to be a Guinea Pig and provide a data point regarding any damage the continued use of a vehicle with this condition sustains.

Since everyone loves pictures I’m attaching some eye candy as a bonus. Enjoy!

Ok, UPS delivered my overnight package a day late but I was able to replace the #1 fuel line at lunch yesterday.

Engine is running smooth again with no evidence of any damage. A 1/4” compression sleeve can get you down the road if your pipe snaps where mine did and they don’t take up any room in your tool bag.

For anyone who has a sudden excessive vibration that makes your engine feel out of balance check for a fuel delivery problem. I suspect a clogged injector would cause a similar issue.

Shouts out to Rovers North for same day processing and shipping and also to Rimmer Bros as the parts I ordered on Tuesday are arriving at my house before I will today. Also UPS express shipping was somehow $20 cheaper coming from the UK ($60 vs $83).
