I daily drive my 1996 110 station wagon. Last night on a trip from the western slope of Colorado to Colorado Springs my #1 injector pipe (STC1694) cracked at the injector nut and was spraying fuel while running.
I noticed a slight vibration increase while coming down Vail pass and a loss of power and was planning to stop in frisco for fuel anyway. When I popped the hood I saw the obvious problem. I limped the Defender to silverthorne and made it to Lowe’s before they closed. I was able to use a 1/4” brass compression fitting to get the pipe reconnected to the injector using the stock nut. The pipe had broken at the flange that mates with the injector.
My engine is now vibrating excessively, seemingly out of balance thanks to the repair. I suspect this is due to fuel delivery and have ordered all new injector pipes as well as a set of injectors (I had planned to do this anyway as my injectors are original).
While this is not a permanent fix I can confirm that a hardware store 1/4” compression sleeve will reconnect a broken injector pipe to the injector in an emergency. I was able to get to Colorado Springs and can still drive the truck. The vibration smooths out at higher rpm but obviously this is not ideal.
I’ll report back with an update as to whether or not new injector pipes and new injectors fixed the out of balance condition or if I permanently damaged any internal engine components as a result of continuing to operate my Defender. I expect parts to arrive in a couple of weeks as my supplier did not have the #2-4 injector pipes in stock.
I understand many others have experienced vibration related to u joints or driveshafts. I want to state clearly that this issue is not related to power transmission but rather occurs while the vehicle is parked as well as while moving.
If anyone else has had a similar experience I’m interested to see what you found as a result.
