300 Tdi down on power

This afternoon on the way back from a trail ride in the north Georgia mountains my 300 Tdi equipped D90 seemed down on power coming up the hills on the divided highway. I didn't notice it this morning so it seems to have come on suddenly.

Since the odometer just turned over 150,000 miles this afternoon I'm thinking injectors? I was already planning on having the pump gone through when I reached this milestone, plus I have an Allisport VNT turbo and bigger intercooler that I was going to fit while the pump was out.

The engine idles smoothly and sounds fine, just is noticeably down on power. I was having to downshift to go up hills on the highway. Thoughts?

Couple simple things come to mind: pull injectors and replace copper seal beneath them, new fuel filter and check valve adjustment. All inexpensive and good to have a baseline before putting in the $ alisport stuff.
A probable cause is a crack in the plastic fuel line sucking in air resulting in a mild case of fuel starvation.

Always start with a fuel filter
My first idea was to change the fuel filter and check the valve adjustment - I will inspect the fuel lines as well.
By the way swagelok makes metric sized fittings that work really well on the plastic fuel lines - they aren't cheap but they work really well.
We used swagelok fittings on the robots we used to paint F-22's - very cool stuff.

Request more info on the swagelok fittings. Do you transition to a different type of tubing or replace with same plastic style?

The stock tubing is nylon. Very common and easy to source. It is not metric. It is normal 3/8" and 5/16". Some of the metal tubing is metric. Make sure you use internal sleeves with the plastic tubing when using compression fittings. I use the ones they sell at Home Depot as it makes it easier to source whenever you want versus expensive and hard to source Swagelok.

My preference is to use air brake line when replacing as it is nylon tubing with polyester reinforcement making it more kink resistant. If you want to get rid of the custom fittings at the sedimenter and lift pump, you can use -5 ORB with a copper washer.

You likely won't see cracks in the plastic line via a visual inspection.
Will not run a vehicle with plastic fuel line.
Nor will I run a 4 cylinder diesel without a 12V fuel pump to help avoid the scenario you have encountered.

Hey Jack
Fellow Atlantan. Curious as to where you go for trails in North Georgia? Always looking for a spot!
Northeast corner of Georgia off Warwoman Road, Winding Stair Gap FS road near Amicalola and Cohutta WMA are some of the favorites for a nice ride in the woods - none of them difficult but scenic and peaceful. There is also the Georgia Traverse which incoroprates many of the roads mentioned above. The Prentice Cooper area just outside of Chattanooga has some neat trails as well.
Talladega National Forest has FS 600-1 & 600-2 although there is a new gate at one end that makes it an in and out trail (questioning the legality of that gate - apparently installed by a landowner not the FS). And there is the SCAR - South Carolina Adventure Route, The Trans Am Trail, the Kentucky Adventure Tour, the Mid Atlantic BDR
For a fun weekend we go up to the Uwharrie National Forest about an hour east of Charlotte, NC - great off road trail system up there.

thanks for the tips. I'll keep an eye out for you!
Your fuel lift pump might be banjaxed, although you'd have a vast drop in power.

.
Change the filter and fill with ATF before reinstalling and then dump a gallon of ATF in a full tank of fuel and it should clean out any garbage in the lines/pump/injectors. Your injectors will get real quiet and be real happy too. Almost 3 decades of doing this with only positive results. Good luck
