I’m looking this engine over for install in my Ninety.

Rotated it over and pulled the pan. Small metal bits stuck in a little bit of sludge in the pan and a little on the pick up screen. Not greatbut not a huge surprise.
I’m looking down into the engine and see this round thing, about 1/2” in dia. Fish it out with the magnet. Not sure what this is??

I did the timing belt and have rotated the engine a bunch and it all sounded smooth, I guess this fell into the engine when I rotated it.
Any ideas?

It looks like there’s some gator spring pieces from a seal. Someone’s been in this engine since it was new so maybe someone replaced a seal and knocked a few small pieces of spring out of a seal?

Next will be pull the oil pump apart and look in there for signs of metal. I have a new pump to install. I’m going to rotate it back and hose down the crank and whatnot with kerosene to flush things out. Then check the bearings with plastagage. New bearings on the way.

The round pieces are the top caps that protect the end of the valves and spread the load on the rockers.

I'd pull the valve cover. Those lash caps should be in place, not sitting in your sump. If you replace any, order them from Turner. Genuine and aftermarket are junk.
I had the valve cover off and looked things over, it looked OK but I guess I’m gonna pull that back off and look closer. Thanks for the info.
That piece is just the top to one of those lashing caps. The ring of it was still on the valve. I got that out of there. I guess that’s why it fell down, it was just the top, the whole thing wouldn’t have fit under the valve to get lost.
Got a couple being over night’ed from RN.

Does RN carry properly hardened lash caps?
He said the have genuine LR ones, the others fit like crap. So, fingers crossed.
RN has great customer service, but last time I looked into this, even Genuine were not properly hardened. The only source for properly hardened caps was specific aftermarket manufacturers. Turner did the research and supplies caps from one such manufacturer. The best domestically available ones I've found are Manley 42125-8.

I kept reading the 200 was an easier drop in replacement. I did order the big install kit from Steve Parker for this Disco 200 into a ninety. No going back now, I just wished I would have started sooner. I’m now NOT going to pull the 12j until this engine has had a test run out of the truck and I know it’s ok.
Now I’m nervous about the lash caps… and I have to look at the under side of that rocker arm to make sure it’s not jacked. Who knows if this was run long with the broken lash cap.

I’ll look up the Manley part #, thanks for that. On the plus side, the caps I pulled to check the bearing, the crank journals looked great and no evidence of a spun bearing. Only 30 ft. lbs on the con rod nuts? Seems light but that’s what is in the manual.
Is this the right size?

Wear Caps, Valve Stem, .313 in. Stem Diameter, .080 in. Thick, Standard Type, Set of 8

Where did you see that? My 200Tdi manual says 56-62Nm, and my 300Tdi manual says 59Nm.
That’s probably for the older engines. I’d get the 200Tdi specific overhaul manual and use the figures there.

I’m almost to Summit racing for these lash caps and I spy the lone review of these Manley ones…

“All of them dished out and grooved like they were soft. “

I’ll buy them but I think I’ll also get the ones from RN just to have on hand. Only $40.
Not mine. Perfectly smooth and hardened to where I couldn’t scratch them with a pick.

Got a link to that specific 200 tdi manual? So, 45 ft lbs on the cob rod caps. Is 100 good on the mains? That’s what my book has. There’s a specific page with tdi torques but not the con rods.
