I know I'm going to regret this, but I've been toying with this for a few months. so here it goes. I have a feeling this will be an exhausting experience (answering questions and providing photos), so i'll do my best. This is a no BS price that I think is more than fair to offer to D-Source members first.




For Sale: 1985 Defender 110 - $45,000 (RHD)


Yep folks, its for sale. I’ll start another thread on why if anyone cares, but keeping it to the facts here.


First of All, it is 100% legally imported in 2011 and I have every single document to support it contained in a nice 3-ring binder kindly prepared by Doug Crowther of Dividing Creek Imports (whom I think all would agree has a pretty good reputation around here - thanks Doug!).
A little history fist, then the complete specifications and details. I purchased this truck in 2010 directly from its long-time owner in the UK after waiting until it turned 25 years old. I actually waited several months and the PO was kind enough to take me at my word that I wanted the truck and it couldn’t have been a more pleasant overall transaction. PO had the truck for at least a decade prior (maybe longer I cant remember, but he’s a member of DefenderSource as well). It had been sitting for three years after a Liveridge UK restoration because he was travelling overseas for work. The odometer showed roughly 17,000 miles when I acquired it from PO, but I can promise you that the chassis has seen many more miles than that. In full disclosure, the true miles are unknown, but in my opinion also very irrelevant because over the course of the past 5-10 years, nearly every item has been rebuilt or replaced. Liveridge rebuilt the entire truck in 2007 at which time a new odometer was installed. Odometer shows 42,*** now. Those miles are mostly daily driver miles, I have not wheeled this truck as I never got around to installing a winch or lockers (which I feel should come ahead of any real wheeling).

Truck left the factory with a diesel engine and that diesel engine has been replaced within the past several years with a remanufactured unit (see pics and call me for details, but the engine should speak for itself in the pics).

There is so much to talk about, I feel like there should be a timeline of money spent, upgrades and repairs, but in the essence of keeping this as simple as possible, here is the abbreviated specification:


  • 1985 Defender 110 – Current RHD Station Wagon (SW) configuration (originally a 3-door);
  • Running gear configured as follows: 300TDi from a later Discovery mated to a R380 5-speed into a LT230 transfer case running taller 1.22 ratio gears. Folks, it’s a Defender so its no race car, but I can routinely pass people on the highway which is monumental achievement for a Defender;
  • 7-Passenger configuration as I opted for only 2 rear NAS jump seats to leave more room for storage in the back. NAS jump seats but the front row is Exmoor and middle row is Exmoor high back seats.
  • Overall Condition: this is subjective to everyone so I’ll post a ton of pictures and I want folks to see this in person. I use this truck every day, all year round (which is good), buut there are exterior pain blemishes and since UK shops couldn’t paint a show-quality paint job if their lives depended upon it, I’d give the Liveridge UK paint job a “5” on the US scale. Some of the paint is flaking off the galvanized cappings and bubbling in places above the wheel arches. I’d want to do a full exterior respray if I were to keep it but its by no means an eyesore. The newer non-ribbed Alpine White cap was restored, repoxy-sealed and painted by ECR along with the station wagon window side taken from an NAS 110 and those are perfect (now, THAT’s how you paint **** folks!!) The interior is in great shape, no rips in the seats, I don’t remember seeing any broken plastic bits and all of the seatbelts work properly. The right side (O/S) door card has a few chips but is overall intact. The NTO pushbutton doors were brand new in 2007 and are in near perfect shape now. The bulkhead is original to this truck but has been consistently treated and is in good shape. This truck is completely suitable for use as a daily driver and I would not hesitate to drive this truck to South America or Alaska without any prep. There are plenty of “apologies” but I’m a perfectionist and this is a Defender so I’m just encouraging you prospective buyers to see this in person. I am under-describing this truck so that you would be pleasantly surprised when you see it in person.
  • Extras – Full external NAS-type roll cage with NAS basket (which is NLA), OEM Defender brush guard which I believe is from an early 2000-era Defender, but it fits really well without looking too clunky. Mantec rock sliders. The rear step bumper is similar to the NAS models, but is ROW and has integrated high-lift jacking points and does tie into the frame and external cage as it supposed to. Hella Black Magic 500 driving lights with Land Rover OEM soft cover protectors. Mantec lockable center console (which in my opinion is more comfortable than the Tuffy ones). There are a lot of take-off NAS interior bits including the station wagon plastic bits and roll bar pads. My next project would be to install a Warn 9500cti winch but I haven’t settled on which type of winch bumper I want to use yet, but I’ll include the winch with the sale. Mantec raised air intake modified to fit the A-pillar leg of the cage. Alisport aluminum full length intercooler and coolant overflow tank.
  • THERE IS NO AIR CONDITIONING
  • Well-concealed 4-speaker system driven by a Pioneer single DIN head unit that has Bluetooth hands free cell phone, DVD-capable, i-Phone/i-Pad compatibility as well as USB ports. I have recently installed a lockable “RAM” mount for the i-Pad mini, so that now covers GPS, streaming radio etc. (you need your own i-Pad mini though). No amps, but it is prewired for an amp. AV setup is okay, but audiofiles will scorn the speaker positioning and lack of amps. Works well for me. I didn’t’ want to hack up the lower dash or the door cards so I found other sneaky spaces for them.
  • New Black Sawtooth alloys with correct 30mm hub-centric spacers and all new correct lugs. I also have original NAS 110/D-130 (ANR 1534) restored in Alpine white that are negotiable with sale of the truck, but please don’t ask me to sell them separately as they are already promised to somebody local.


I’ll do a brief reverse chronological list of things I have done to the best of my recollection, but I have paperwork, comprehensive pictures and documentation supporting all of this scanned in PDF docs that I will provide to anyone that has gotten to the point of deposit. I am not interested in beaming everything to everyone on the planet if you know what I mean.



  • 7/15 – New front upper propshaft joint (lower was done last year)
  • 6/15 – installed 5-new black Sawtooth allows with 30” hub-centric spacers, mounted and balanced/rotated 5 BFG 275/70/16 All-Terrains with under 10,000 miles on them.
  • 4/15 – comprehensive restoration of the frame, outriggers, rear tub, tank cradle and complete internal and external Waxoyl. This included POR-15 treatment before the waxoyl, new fuel tank, new tub supports, new shock towers and many hours of prep. just to give you a rough idea on the time and prep spent on this latest Waxoyl and restoration, it was up on a lift at my Uncle's restoration garage for 3-4 weeks and I spend at least 30 hours on it. I know there are folks that will say that Waxoyl hides bad things, but I took tons of before during and after photos and I'm not hiding anything you can't go through all the effort and leave it bare/unprotected and I had planned on keeping this for daily use, so its fully internally coated frame rails as well;
  • 4/15 – New OME springs (751/755) with new Land Rover shock towers and retaining rings. New rear bump stops, the existing OME shocks were fine, I just stripped them coated with POR-15 and recoated in a top coat of yellow. Rides much nicer than the super stiff Britpart springs that I removed but still has good feeling at highway speed.
  • 4/15 – comprehensive maintenance including every fluid flush/change. Fully synthetic AMS lubricants for gearbox, diffs and transfer case, Shell Rotella 10w30 dino oil for the engine;

  • 4/14 – installed new Alisport full-length intercooler, thread here: http://www.defendersource.com/forum/f48/allisport-intercooler-fitment-54494.html
  • 3/15 – New 100amp alternator (the good type from Robert Davis)
  • 9/13 – New Clutch, bellhousing and Slave/Master cylinder ($4,000)
  • 7/13 – Swivel balls rebuilt with new seals (+/-$2,000)
  • 2/13 – Major service with all fluids replaced and comprehensive Waxoyl ($5,200)
  • 2/12 – New rear axle ball joint, replace rear drive flanges, new silicone turbo hoses, oil pan gasket and other maintenance ($3,700)
  • 12/11 - Full Safety Devices External Safari Cage (NAS type) installed in 2011 by ECR along with take-off NAS roof and station wagon sides with rebuilt window felts and NAS jumpseats ($16,000) – yes, we have all laughed over the $16,000 bill, but find the thread if you’re that curious I want to keep this to a for sale thread – thanks!;


There is easily over $30,000 invested in just upgrades, repairs and maintenance done over the course of my ownership, which does NOT include miscellaneous invoices where I purchased the parts nor my time and labor nor does it include the GBP27,000 Liveridge UK restoration completed in 2007. In hindsight, I could have bought one of Copley’s 110s for what I’ve spent on this over the past 6 years. This truck is impeccably maintained and has a well-documented history and import record.

some of these photos are with the fuel tank removed so you can actually see the new tub supports and condition of the entire inside of the rear crossmember (I wish all for sale posts would show that - it just happened that I was installing a brand new fuel tank at the time of the waxoyl so it made sense to really document the condition).

Thanks guys.
I also should mention that it has been registered and titled in Massachetts and has s current inspection sticker. Clean title in my possession.
I have no clue what the registration requirements are state-to-state but there are plenty of threads on where ROW diesels can and cannot be registered so a quick search will yield your answer I'm sure.

I think it's a fantastic truck. I'm also jealous of your garage, especially the hoist that looks to go into the floor.
Who makes that and can you share a photo of that baby blue sports car that creeps into a couple of shots?

Again, thanks for all of the positive comments. I have to say, you never know how things are received on this board. I suppose if I were asking $90k, I'd be hearing about how shitty it was, but I think the price is very fair and where it should be. It's an enthusiast-owned truck and it shows. I know every nut and bolt on that truck and because I'm constantly in tune with all the noises and sounds it makes I usually correct issues before they become big issues or leave me stranded.


I've got a couple PMs asking for more pictures which I suppose is natural when I mention that the paint is "5" on a 10-scale. I should be clear, it is not a crappy rattle-can job at all and when its waxed it looks awesome. I'm just saying that not everyone preps birmabright panels properly with etching and epoxy primers etc and the UK restorers are infamous for this. Therefore, there are some areas where the paint is lifting and you can see some aluminum oxide lifting the paint.
And in typical UK fashion, when Liveridge restored the truck in 2007 they used whatever parts they had. For example, one of the rear corner cappings is galvanized and the other is not and is rusting. I was planning on simply ordering a new piece from RN, painting it Epsom and riveting it on. Most importantly, look at the areas around the door hinges on the bulkhead. THAT is the area that people need to be concerned with and these pics (taken this morning) show a solid bulkhead where it matters.


(BTW Chris, I wish that was my garage. that is my uncle's man-cave where he restores vintage Corvettes - It is awesome in every way. even with the radiant heat floors, I left the Defender in there for a week after steam cleaning the frame there is such low humidity in that garage that was a perfect place to prep for Waxoyl. Only issue is that I spend half a day laying down protective cardboard and plastic because I was terrified of making a mess of his garage)

Thanks, you may be right.


However, I do believe in giving back to some extent and while this is not quite "giving", I'd rather give some board members a chance at this before dealing with dude that's had a couple of Bud Lights hitting the "Buy it Now" button and then bailing because he didn't ask his wife permission.


Plus I'd prefer to skip the part where somebody agrees to pay $55,000 and then begins to chisel the price because he sees some paint bubble. I'm more of a no-bullshit guy, though, yes, if it goes to eBay, it's going to be more just because of the hassle factor.
