Tigerwerkes, thanks I'm checking out those sites. Already found a couple nearby (13K-17K Euro range) in Catania area that I want to take a look at. Ciao!

I bought a very nicely refurbished 1987 90 with a 19J last summer near Rome, and I shipped it to NC. "Nice" to me means that it was based on what it was originally... not pimped out. It had a few small things that it still needed, but in general it was as good as it was going to get. Anyway, it was "nicer" than the one you're looking at.

I then drove that thing from NC to CT via PA. Never, ever, again. A 19J is obviously more than enough for off-roading, and anywhere you don't ever go over 50mph. I sold it in October for $28k. I made a few bucks, but I wouldn't want to guess at my hourly wage.

With the number of 200 and now 300 Tdi reaching 25 years old, the value of a 19J has to be falling. If I found a super condition LR 90 or 110 with a 12J or 19J, I might consider moving it to the US, but from a value stand point I'd have to add the cost of replacing the motor after importing it. After all is said and done with what you pay to get that one to the US, I don't see it being worth that much. No wonder the seller is willing to pay half the shipping.

Pragueprado,

Appreciate the engine anecdote...a long haul does not sound fun. Another nail in the coffin for this deal.

In defense of the seller, who I know and have purchased another car from...don't think the undercoating was a nefarious cover-up. But rather a "let's paint the whole thing, inside and out" because we might as well. Besides the price, that seems to be drawing a lot of ire - which I understand.

Don't get me wrong, the vehicle looks ok and certainly has a value, and am not slagging off on the seller; I'm just saying that the price he's asking might be near correct after its important to the US is done and dusted and title's in hand.

Quick update

Thanks for all the great recommendations which I took to heart. I'm am a new official owner of a '91 D90 (ROW, 200TDI), which I found here in Italy and will ship back in a couple months. Very clean, rust-free all original (minus a couple bolt-ons as you can tell). Now the fun begins...

Excellent. Less than what the guy was asking for the other one?

It looks great. Congratulations. I like the patina. The front spare is original (Michelin XM+S 205 86 16), its old and cracked by now, be careful.

Yes 13k€ which seemed very fair for the condition. I need to spruce up the interior a bit but everything else is excellent. About 130K mi

Thanks, looks in good shape actually. But anyway, plan on moving to the rear and upgrading all tires to All-terrains
