If it's me, I would like to know why this happened and, further, why the fuse did not pop to protect the wires. If you just replace the damage without learning the cause you're in for it again.

This is a great point. Itís rare to see internal wiring breakdown the same way as the external segments. Meaning, it wouldnít be my first guess to look for frayed wiring.

My next thought would be a mechanical connection. In that location, there arenít many mechanical wire crimps, two major ones, the constant unfused brown and the switched unfused white; both connecting to the ignition switch and both with mechanical crimps within inches of the switch - maybe one broke but, I doubt it. Looking at the pictures, the damage is heaviest at the ignition switch, I also see some aftermarket wiring and inline fusing in the background, one may surmise that a tap was made into either the brown or white wire and it was right at the mechanical crimps at the ignition switch.

The unfused nature of those wires could account for why a fuse didnít blow. Technically, the brown is used with a maxi in the engine bay but there are many reasons for it not blowing in time. The white is completely unfused.

When it comes to electrical and your Defender, the shop rate may be good insurance. Have you checked with https://www.roadsidewerx.com/?

As Bill stated, if you just replace and not correct you may just see the same or worse happen again.

Looks like most of the damage is at the igition switch?

The harness I have does need some new wires run in (white). I got this loom with a bulkhead so it has not been used by me.

Would also be the time to add blade fuse holders. Your call

Yes, from the pictures it looks like most of the damage in vicinity of the switch.

Source of problem

Yes, I also believe it was the ignition switch. I was moving the heat vent control arm from feet to windscreen and within 60 seconds smoke started seeping through the windscreen defrost vents.

John, send me a pm (not a visitor message as it seems to be read only once? And lost it) with your address I will send you what I got and if you can use it we can figure out later value. If you can't use it you only pay shipping both ways. Fair dinkum.

I'd also suggest that if you have any concerns about the instruments being damaged, might want to consider VDO Vision Black gauges. Actual numbers instead of vague bar graphs, and they even have the tachometer.
