Mike, out sheer curiousity did you do the motor swap or did it come that way? But seriously it returns 31-39 mpg?

Hi Jason,

In the Audi it does 35 to 44 MPG on the highway and 23 to 30 MPG around town. It has a topspeed of 135 MPH in the Audi. I will try tonight what the topspeed is in the Defender. We bought it as a non running project and got it going. It is a the first one I have ever heard of, but it fits nicely and bolts to the RangeRover ZF box quite easily.

Wiring was complex, we kept the Audi dash and wiringloom complete. It has the switch panel from the Audi installed next to the Defender speedo. See pic below.

The instrument panel with speedo / tacho / digital tripmeter is now installed in the box under the passenger seat. The engine ECU is located in the motor compartment. The ignition switch with immobilizer key from the Audi is also located under the passenger seat

Cheers, Michael

I don't suppose there's a chance of getting any video of the test drive?

GLWTS....I hope the ECU is well protected. Not sure I would want to go fording too many deep rivers with this one!

What is the yolk/U-joint coming out of the front of the engine for?

I have the oppurtunity to acquire a purpose-built 4-cyl BMW turbo diesel engine used to power winch hydraulics on an America's Cup sailboat. It was spare with only test hours. Over 300lbs of torque supposedly! Also have a guy that says fabricating a bellhousing for any transmission would be no problem. My hesitation (other than the fact that I don't actually need it) is the fact that with all the electronics and rarity of parts I'm guessing it would be "challenging" down the road when things break.

The reason I bring it up in this thread because I think this Audi swap is an incredibly cool idea......if you've planned ahead with some spares and support (know exactly what year and maybe even the VIN of the car it came from) so when you're looking for an IP or belt or something two years from now. What if the ECU gets wet etc.?
Other than those concerns, I bet this thing motors nicely on the highway.

GLWS. Not a bad price.

Find pic of what is linked to that UJ below ...

The engine ECU is in the engine bay, watertight, in a big black box, it will not get wet.

Yes, we thought it was a great engine to use ... afterall it does 135 MPH in the Audi A6, matted to the auto ZF gearbox is makes a very smooth motorway cruiser at 100 MPH.

Yep, certainly a very attractive price for someone that does not require a fully rebuild or intents to do it themselves.

What would it take to add air conditioning to this specimen? Besides money?

We could fit a factory LHD underdah unit for around $ 3000 installed, using a custom made compressor on the engine.

thanks, Michael
