Restoring Defender in Pakistan
 
Hello all,

I am planning about purchasing this 1984 model LR defender, one can see her condition, which needs lots and lots of restoration. Biggest problem here in Pakistan is that its parts are not available here. I can't find a used or reconditioned engine of defender from Pakistan. Otherwise Pakistan has some very good market of used spare parts and engines and parts of other brands like toyota and honda are available. I just want to ask experienced people that is there any petrol engine of toyota that can fit in LR defender 110 station wagon with minimum of alteration. Because otherwise I have no option, whereas this vehicle also has toyota 2400cc engine, which is not in working condition.

most of the engines in the US would be uncommon in pakistan.

I guess the 2400 toyota engine is from a hilux ... that must be pretty common and easily available. Replacing a non-working engine with one of the same type would be the easiest solution.

Bet you can get that Toyota engine running. I wouldn't worry about originally at this point. If it will turn over its going to start.

i would stick with the engine it has in it or replace with the same or similar toyota engine since it has already probably been modified to accept that 2.4 yota engine.

Well I can't trust the wisdom of mechanics here, they are hell bad in alteration. and I know that it wont work at all... that is why if i need to change that engine then I should go for something that is available... one more option is buying V8 petrol engine from UK or some other overseas market and importing it in Pakistan.... any suggestions on that..

Well that is something like a custom for drivers of countryside and villages... and that mud flap is part of it... when they decorate their vehicle, it looks like a decorated bride......

No kidding. My times in Pakistan these guys are everywhere. Even in the mountains on small one lane roads constantly passing slower vehicles at crazy high speeds. Fun stuff.

I have an idea ... a mercedes OM 617 engine is a popular conversion and I would imagine there are a few available from damaged vehicles.

Yes you are right, they are everywhere, and I at times I think that how these drivers risk their own lives while driving like this.... This is height of over confidence.... and ofcourse good to see someone, who has spent some times here in Pakistan, don't know whether it was good experience for you or not...

Sir, I would prefer a petrol engine as quality of diesel fuel and good experienced educated technician are not available here and diesel engine requires both...

It was a great experience. The people I met were friendly and polite.

This idea may seem a bit "out there", but are there any original 2.5L N/A diesel Land Rover engines available in the market there? If so, the 2.5L N/A diesel engine and the 2.25L petrol engine share the exact same engine block design. I am taken to understand that it is possible to rebuild the 2.5L N/A diesel engine as a 2.25L petrol engine by replacing the engine's head and some other bits here and there. Due to the limited availability of parts where you are, this might be an option that you'd like to look into. I'd recommend doing some more research though.
