Series vin question

Is there a ligitiment, rational reason the vin tag on a 109 SIIa would say "Rover 88" instead of "Rover 109"

The Dro September 30th, 2014 05:43 PM

Paul

If it's on the VIN plate, the truck is not original. The VIN plate will say if it's a IIA...III. 88...109.

Checked the VIN in CalVIN

I can't open that site from my phone. Will check when I get home to decode.

I'm looking at a 109 but the 88 is throwing up some flags for me, I may be too cautious.

Will post once I've decoded later tonight

Except for the one on this 109 says 88

sonoronos September 30th, 2014 06:13 PM

what happens when someone with an 88 decides to convert to a 109?

another way of looking at it: what happens to the vin of a 90 that becomes a 110?

i doubt any these vins magically change along with the wheelbase.

I would hope those are documented. Unfortunately, this one is not.

You'll have documentation of the convertion and can notify the insurance company that you modified it.

I for one; won't (actually didn't) take that risk... not worth it

There are plenty of legit trucks out there.

lordhelemt September 30th, 2014 07:31 PM

it decodes as a 52 series 1. the tag says "Rover 88". The truck is a 109. ugly.....

The VIN code on the VIN tag decodes as a S1, but the same tag says 88?

Am i understanding that right?

Yes. Vin code is a S1. Same tag says 88. Tag is installed on a 109.

Vin on title and tag match. Shows up as '63 Land.

Contractor October 1st, 2014 07:05 AM

As Briggs suggests, ask him for the number stamped on the front frame horn. If it matches the title I don't think I'd be to worried about it.

Somebody could of easliy just put a VIN plate in the truck to make it appear Complete.......purley cosmetic.

Everyone thanks for your help. He can find the vin on the chassis. Sounds like it may have been ground off. This one is outside my risk tolerance so I'm going to pass.

So it's a Puma :)?

sonoronos October 3rd, 2014 07:04 AM

Sorry for the hijack, but I'm a little confused.

Let's say that a person has a NAS 90 and wants to convert it into a 110. He picks up a Marsland 110 frame, the appropriate parts, etc - all legitimately - and after a few weekends, he has a nice shiny 110 sitting on his driveway. The title is legitimate, but still says "Defender 90".

The insurance company does absolutely nothing with registrations or titles. The state won't retitle the vehicle because it's the same truck. The frame has no VIN. So the owner still has...a Defender 90.

So how is, potentially, this truck any different if the PO basically took an 88 and turned it into a 109? Is it the lack of documentation (perhaps due to the seller being a second or tertiary owner?)

Contractor October 3rd, 2014 07:07 AM

Sounds like you did the right thing.

Does the guy know where to find the Vin number?
