Thinking about importing from UK
I am fairly new to all of this, but have done a large amount of research regarding what's legal and what's not on importing a 110 into the states. Along the way, I have come across several illegal 110's, and even one being currently sold by a Honda dealer. Anyway, I am strongly considering purchasing a 110 from the UK from what seems to be a nice man named David Slater. Does anyone have any good or bad info on him? He provides the Heritage Certificate and everything appears to be on the up and up. Thanks.

Don't give your money to anyone without seeing the truck in person. I'm amazed by the number of people willing to send money to people they've met on the internet.

Even if this guy is really great you can be deeply disappointed with a 25yr old defender if the first time you see it is at the docks.

If you do insist on sending money to strangers please paypal me $10k as deposit on a RoW spec 110. 25 years old. Mint condition. Owned by a priest. Full service history. Only 15k genuine miles! LHD with updated AC that blows so cold it snows!

I would not go that far. You have a couple options.

1. You can buy something your self and get Doug from Dividing Creek imports to handle all the logistics of shipping, customs, and more shipping.

2. Buy one from some one like me at GMR, or from rovermike at river house mini's.

3. buy one state side.

Never heard of this person but I second Jason's advice. There are a ton of good trucks already here IMO and from my perspective it looks like the asking prices have been dropping lately. The cliché is never any truer than in used Rovers; You get what you pay for.

agree 100%

Must be the start of the weekend. The first of the weekly "Thinking of importing" threads.
Welcome to the forum, please use the search function and post up a picture of the Defender/J@@p/G Wagon you ultimately buy.

If it's in Suffolk or if he will drive it down here, I can look at it for you. My advise, buy a Tithonous from the ex MOD lot. Sale right now for 3500 pounds....agreed though don't buy unless you, or someone can check it out first

How much research do people do?

Is this David Slater based in Sunderland UK? OK I have not heard of him, so nothing good or bad.

However he has exported to the USA and if you want some of his customer names look HERE or here

You may be able to locate his customers and ask them about their experiences and if their vehicles were impounded or not.

If you would like someone to do a PPI on the vehicle I can help.

Thanks, all great advice. I am looking for one that can be used as my daily driver and 30mile commute for the most part along with an 87 911 Targa that I own. I am spoiled with other previous cars that I have owned and do want some of the creature comforts that exist. I would love to find one stateside, but it seems like all of the nice custom ones are 70-100k, and all of the ones that will take quite a bit of work are very reasonable but I don't have time to put in the countless hours of work on it. I really like the idea of finding one with a 200 or 300tdi, but those typically fall into the more expensive category since they are not factory installed engines. This one in particular comes from Saudi Arabia originally so has no rust issues that he has described or from the 200 pics that i have seen. It has the V8 however, so that defeats the good gas mileage reason that I can tell my wife. :) My budget is $40-50kish when its all said and done. I am willing to buy a cheaper one and do some more minor work to it, such as new interior, wheels, accessories etc... Anyway, I guess the question is, can I find one or have someone build one stateside in that price range with a 200/300tdi that does not have rust issues, is preferably black or grey, LHD, with AC? Is that asking for too much?

Oh, and i believe it is the same David Slater in Sunderland. He has a different RHD 110 listed on ebay right now. The one I am interested in is not listed yet.

If you have that kind of budget, google Foley SV, he can build your dream rover, and he does great work from what I saw at his shop

Not if you want to import to the USA......

If you like the Army look Urban Cruisers says they are importing a 2 door 110 soon and will mate with a 200tdi. While they have it get them to add AC and any other creature comforts. BAM! You're ready to cruise in the slow lane.

WBSurfer September 4th, 2014 02:55 PM

That's a real nice budget to be working with. There are plenty of real nice 110's around in the US for that kind of bread. Be patient and keep your daily search going and the right one will definitely come your way! :thumb:

I think $40-50k for me is like your $70-100k - sure you could spend it, but do you really need to? No. There are tons in the US for under your budget - and defenders are pretty comfortable in stock form. No need to go crazy with it. "Creature comforts" always gets a raised eyebrow look from many on this forum. Keep researching and searching - if eBay is the only place you've looked then I could see where you're getting your $70-100k figure from, but not in the real world.
