My book news

I have not been posting in the Land Rover forums as much because I'm still spending
a lot of time writing - I've finished the editing of my first book - Look Me In The Eye - and I'm hard at work on the second.

LMITE tells the story of my growing up with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism. Those of you who've met me and thought I was eccentric - that's partly the reason. I wrote the book last year, and sent it to publishers this January. I was shocked to find every major publishing house wanted to do the book, and I ended up giving it to Crown, one of the divisions of Random House, the world's largest publisher.

You can read about my early fascination with machines, my work in music (KISS, Pink Floyd, and others), my time as an engineer designing electronic games, and then, finally, starting Robison Service. I've got a web site with author information (it's new and incomplete so far) and a blog. You can find them at www.johnrobison.com

Look Me In The Eye is for sale on Amazon right now. If you pre-order you get 34% off on the hardcover 1st edition. The book will ship the last week of Septmeber. It will be on sale in stores everywhere in the US and Canada September 25th.

This afternoon, we chose a publisher for the book in the UK as well. So my book will be available over most of the English-speaking world this Christmas. The plan is for the book to be released in the USA September 25, then be released in England a few weeks later, and Australia a few weeks after that.

I will be doing a tour of the northern USA in October, followed by a UK tour in November. Then, during the winter, I'll be reading in bookstores in the southern USA.

I don't know how much the press will make of my Land Rover connection in the USA. I expect it'll be a bigger deal when I tour in England and Scotland later this winter.

I hope to see many of you on my tour. It's the first time I've left the shop for an extended period in 20 years.

My first book is not really about the car business or Land Rovers but it talks at length about my struggles to find my own way, and I did of course end up with Robison Service - a Land Rover shop.

The second book will talk at greater length about starting the car bisiness, and how I made it successful.

Congratulations on your book deal. If your tour comes through Atlanta, I'll come down and meet you.

Congratulations John.

Is it ok if I don't find you eccentric?

Andrew Vick April 26th, 2007 06:53 AM

And what about out west? You've helped a lot of us out here, you know.

robisonservice April 26th, 2007 07:38 AM

OK, for Scott . . . I will definitely read in Atlanta. That's probably going to happen in the winter phase of my book tour. Dates will go up on www.johnrobison.com as soon as I know them. They probably won't be scheduled till summer, though.

For Matt . . . It's taken a long time to pass for normal, and I'm pleased to hear it works.

For Andrew . . . I do not know where I'll be reading in Colorado but I will get there.

Anyway, thanks for your support and I hope to see you all out there

Maybe you could stop through Kansas and help me find my way.
I'd read the book but work is pilling up on me.

Anyone that actually LIKES to drive a hot-in-summer, cold-in-winter, leaky, smelly, english rattle-trap that alternatively fries you, then freezes you while either blowing you dry with the drafts coming through the front or drenches you with the rain coming in from the side while simultaneously dousing your engine with oil and catching fire is quite possibly NOT the best person to judge the degree of another's eccentricity.

Just my opinion. Now I'm going to drive off in my leaky english rattletrap to go get lunch & enjoy the drive.

Thats great John, my wife and I will be sure to read it.

JBurt April 26th, 2007 07:39 PM

Can't wait to read it, any chance on a VA stop? I mean, I owe you for all the time you've saved me in the shop with your wisdom.

robisonservice April 26th, 2007 08:13 PM

JBurt, I'm going to try and read anywhere there's a reasonable crowd. I'll be doing this over the next 18 months. First leg in September/October, then another leg in December/January, then a whole new tour (new cities) for the paperback release of my book in the fall of 2008.

Thanks for your support.

Cool, John. Good job.

Outstanding John!
My 15 year old daughter has Asperger Syndrom too. We love to read books written by fellow Aspee's. I just pre-ordered it from Amazon. Good luck with the book sales.

I see a listing for the abridged audio book, any chance for an un-abridged version?? I spend most of my day driving and audio books work very well for me.

karlusmagnus April 29th, 2007 08:21 PM

Best of luck John. Will pre-order, and looking forward to it.
Karl.

My audio book editor tells me that 50-60,000 words is what fits on 6 cds. My book is almost 100,000 words. So it's got to be abriged for that.

It's possible we will have an unabriged download at some future date.

It's still up in the air what we are doing on the audio book. I'd prefer to read it, but I may not be the best reader, so we may end up with an actor instead. Stay tuned for an announcement on my web site and blog when that's answered.
