Lightbulb ST Roll Cage - New build/rubber repair - gauging interest

I know there are a few looking for ST d-90 roll cages. Myself included. I also know a fair number of existing cages are suffering rubber rot. (my 94 was by the time I sold it in 02). A used B-C set was sold here a few months back for a very reasonable price, but it was like raw meat to wolves in winter.... and we're not going to see any new ones any time soon.

A-hoops are available. It's the overmolded B & C hoops, and B-C Horizontals that are the NAS NLA parts. I'm considering the insane: creating molds (would need good, existing parts as masters. Hopefully lent by a local ST owner - maybe a stainless hardware upgrade for the trouble?). I have experience with and have friendly talent available who are experts at mold manufacturing. These would probably be fiberglass over polyurethane lined molds - limited life, but we're not talking large numbers. Overmolding would be with urethane foam. Need to play with density and products, but have a couple in mind. Hell, some offer a good range of custom tinting if that's your thing. May also use a Rhino product as top coat for long term UV stability. The point is to make these as exact a copy as possible both for looks and the obvious fit of the tops.

As for the steel hoops, Dale at Rovertrader had rubberless cage parts I may ping him about again. Copy them. I also have fab and machine shop, tube bending, tig, mig, etc - so re-creating the hoops can be done. If I do more than one set, I'd create true fixtures.

No lottery ticket, but wondering if I can re-coop my mold and fab costs with enough interest. Shipping could also be a killer, adding to finished price. Not going to happen tomorrow, but over the course of the year maybe...

Interest?

How do you start a poll around here?

I've got a complete ST roll cage with NO padding on it that you could use as a base for your mold idea. Let me know if you are interested.

I love the idea. Adding a poll is under the "Thread tools" link. If you can't access it, what do you want the poll to be?

And yes, I would be interested in a whole setup -factory look, just to tuck away.

I like the idea. Not that I need the cage but I wish the parts never went NLA. Just the thought of them being available is a nice security blanket for a lot of people, I suspect.

Update if ya'll care.

Looks like I've found a local donor cage for taking original molds from (Thanks to LenB via JimC...). Hopefully will start the molding over the next few months. By summer, hope to have something functional for overmolding. Original metal copies would be looked at after that. I'll probably post updates in the 'Smaller Projects' forum as this goes along.

Jack- now you stepped in it. I have another donor cage lined up in the area too, but you're actually closer. I'll pm with you offline.

Idea is still very alive- just got buried by some other projects this summer (like the kitchen cabinet painting that turned into a full re-model).

Intent is to work on it through this winter. Seems there is enough interest that I may build the molds with a silicone lining to last a bit longer.

Summer is over... get on it. It sure seems like there would be a great market of them.

If you got the mold experts around, could you also consider building a mold for a 2002 TD5 center dash piece to fit a flush mount double DIN stereo? I would like to setup my new dash with the double DIN.
Thanks.

The one I got from Stephen is a double din - I posted a pic in another thread. Big enough for a nav screen head.
