Stupid question(s). I'm storing gas in this can now. Can I switch to diesel? If so, what is protocol? Thoughts on long term storage with the can laying on its wide side (storage issues...) or is this a big no-no?

Nothing needed to switch to Diesel (buy a yellow strap so others know what is inside the can) going from diesel to petrol would require a viton gasket to prevent petrol vapor escape

Use a cap wrench to crank it down (don't over tighten) if you intend to store it any direction other than handle up - though long term (1yr+) storage isn't ideal for any fuel. You are better served rotating the fuel out 2+ times a year.

I've switched back and forth from diesel to regular gas with no issues, essentially I just make sure it's completely empty and/or try to wipe it out a little bit just to get any big drips/etc out of it beforehand. You're talking about a minuscule amount that will get diluted with whatever you fill it up with.

Regarding storage, I don't think there are any side-storage issues...as long as you have the viton version of the cap seal. Many folks store jerry cans on their side when in a roof rack.

depends on which can top you have. Storing gas in a can with a buna seal will swell the seal and invariably cause the seal to break the lip on the inner cap and make it leak. If you have the viton seals you can store gas or diesel in the cans. The seals are around $10 from some dude on Expo. Rule of thumb is diesel in a gas can is no problem, gas in a diesel can will break the shoulder on the cap. The color of strap if the can is used isn't trust worthy imo. Definitely change the seal asap if you have a yellow strap can and have gas in it.

Great info, thank. I have Adam's can pictured on the first post. Adam, what seal do did you stick in there?
That, or I should just fix the fuel gauge on my sailboat. At 25hp, we are talking 0.6g/hr at 75% power at cruise. 33 gal tank = a summer's worth of capacity. The 'Admiral' would be more at ease with a 2nd fuel can just in case.

------ Follow up post added June 18th, 2015 11:36 AM ------

Russell, bad info. Just went back and looked at what I purchased, its a viton type gasket. And yes snug that cap down good and tight if on its side.
