Question. I have one of these that I bought and it looks great....but, if I'm towing a boat (5000lbs), do I need the supports that I often see under the row type of hitches? I would rather not have my rear crossmember, trailer, and boat taking a separate trip one day.

Absofrigginglutely.

Any rear cross member only hitch should be considered light duty and not used for recovery or towing anything significant. Its not likely to break away but with that much weight you could certainly twist/bend the 14 gauge cross member, you have to distribute the pull/ and braking force.

So I need to track down those supports, or is there a sturdier option?

Or make them. The Dixon Bate ones are made from angle iron. Jacks hitch looks beefy, you just need to add the forward legs.
