R380

If they went at the same time chances are it is just the guide. Mine got stuck in 5th and I used high/low to drive it home. It is a little plate with a molded channel in it that can be removed externally. It looks like an upside down U and one of the U sides broke so it got stuck in 5th. Thank goodness SW rovers helped me out with the replacement part.

Could also be a broken shaft. In either case, it is easy enough to fix and if the synchro hubs are ok and the main shaft is ok, a new set of synchros will make it like new.

They did go at same time. Was able to drive on 4th gear home thankfully. If easy fix, I may give it a run though if more than that its above my capabilities...... hate to junk it nevertheless.
So if its that plate, I can access it from outside?

I belive you can as it is one of the shaft forks. The bad part is if it broke who know where it fell or if it got crunched up in the tranny. I had someone rebuild mine at that point as it needed to be pulled. If I had a diagrahm of the tranny casing I could tell you the part. I am sure someone on this board can point it out so you may want to post something in the Defender Technical section regarding this.

I would like to get my hands on an extra R380. Mine needs to be rebuilt. 3rd and 4th scream, 5th is oddly quiet though....

I'd like to get a down unit and rebuild it on the bench to minimize my down time.

serial number will help. V8 and TDI will have different length main shaft.

uggh, yes. sorry. Dave Ashcroft explained to me that the variance between TDI and V8's is in the front input shaft. Point being, variant type would help. I have a spare 61A in need of a rebuild as an example.
