I know it's been a few days since I've updated anyone and I apologize for that. I have managed to talk to the patent attorney and the accountant, as well as file with the state so I can officially do business! However I have to make a decision about the tooling to have the cast parts made. Coincidentally, the tooling cost is the same as the cost of the 3d printer I'm looking to purchase. The manufacturer is running a few sample prints of the tooling I designed and shipping them to me to inspect. If they will work, I'll purchase the printer and I can then make tooling for all different size part to be cast rather than have to dish out tons of cash for each different size part to have the tooling made. The downside is that both options have a 6-8 week lead time.

Ha Ha! I hear ya, I'm waiting too. Thanks again for everyone's patience. This is a great forum, nobody has hounded me at all about how long this is taking, although I know everyone is anxious. I didn't realize that this process would take so much time to work through. It wouldn't be so bad if all the companies out there were just waiting by the phone for you to call so that they could immediately provide you with whatever you want.

I want to be fully up front with everyone here, it is still going to be a while. Tooling costs for the casting process is ridiculously high and coincidentally happen to be roughly the same as the cost of the 3D printer I've been looking at purchasing. The printer manufacturer should be sending me some sample prints of the tooling for the parts any day now. They informed me on Monday that they've been sent to their printing department. If the prints are acceptable, which I'm sure they will based on the printer specs, then I will order a printer so that I can create the tooling myself for multiple size extinguishers, flash lights, air tanks, and anything else that you guys may be interested in. This will allow the manufacturing cost for all future products to be quite a bit less. In the case of this mount, given the number requested so far, it would drop the price approximately $11-$13 for each mount. I know everyone would appreciate that, right???

So you're gonna 3D print the pieces to use as patterns to cast? Perhaps a woodshop could make the parts quicker? And with a better surface finish?

The company who is going to do the casting has already talked to their pattern maker (who works with wood) and he has a 6 week lead time, and is the one charging the ridiculous amounts.

The printer has resolutions as low as 0.05mm (0.0019"). A light once-over with some scotch brite should leave a very smooth finish on the tooling and may not even make a difference since the process is sand casting.

I finally got word from the 3D printer manufacturer that my sample prints are on their way. I apologize for the slow progress.

Crikey, they'll develope a new way to extinguish fires by the time your legal team gets everything done! I'm assuming thats the hold (actual) up. Clearly the product is not going to be crap, cause that hits the market within days of a prototype.

Nah, it's not anything legal, or patents at this point anymore. The hold up is on the manufacturing side of things now. I should have some test prints from the 3D printer manufacturer on my doorstep any day now so I can check them out and make sure that they will work as expected. I can't justify spending thousands on having the tooling made for these clamps which is a one shot deal when I can invest the same amount into a 3D printer that will allow me to make my own tooling. I will even be able to produce clamp halves for multiple size extinguishers off of the same board in one run of parts when I have the casting done.

Quick update here, I placed the order for the 3D printer this morning so I can print the molds for the sand casting. The sample prints looked pretty good even at a low resolution.
