FS Glow Plug Relay, Heavy Duty Controller - Diesel

Heavy Duty Automatic Glow Plug Controller with built in timer.
We use these with great success on Diesel Engine Conversions.

Turn on the key and the glow plugs run for 12 to 14 seconds.
Has a lead for a dash light and one which ends the glow cycle when the starter is engaged.
Rated @ 70 AMPs and about 4 times larger than the little relays that have small contacts and windings.

$69 + $11 flat rate shipping.

Legend for third picture:
30 - Power from battery (+) source (usually power lead on starter solenoid)
87 - Up to 6 Glow Plugs (+)
86 - Switching source (+) (ignition or fuel shutoff solenoid on injection pump)*
85 - Ground (-)
L - To Dash Warning Light (+)
50 - To starter engagement lead on starter solenoid (+)
.

So this is better than the stock setup? Worth replacing a working unit? Thanks.

I have replaced at least a half dozen of these on 200TDI setups, which have a tendency to burn the contacts shut making the glow stay on until they burn out.
I think these relays were rated at 40 AMPS.

The 300TDI went up to 50 amps, so the problem is much less common than with a 200TDI.

This relay is rated @ 70 amps and I've used them for years.
When members started asking about this because of a thread I posted, started supplying them.
Next thing I knew people started using them on diesel conversions.
I don't know if you need to replace your relay until it goes bad, but if it does by the time you disconnect the battery or relay, the glow plugs will have burned out and the cost of new ones and the trouble to replace them is less than installing this heavy duty unit and finding a stock replacement.
So if you subscribe to the adage "anything worth doing is worth overdoing" to prevent a failure, I think it's a good choice.

This relay is heavy duty, so the 2 main power leads are bolt on instead of spade connector, so some adapting will need to take place to replace the spades with screw down round lug eye connectors.

So does the starter lead (50) energize the starter? Or does it do something to turn off the relay when the starter is engaged?

50 auto-magically switches off power to the glow plugs.

It was an easy install and works flawlessly...allowed me to install a new style ignition switch (same key as the doors) but does not have a glow terminal...with a 19J there was never a timer...thanks Robert!
