Free 300tdi swap for 12j 2.5 in Bulgaria

That's the catch. I am posting this on behalf of a friend in Bulgaria who wants to swap a 300 tdi for 12j 2.5 NA so the Rover can be exported to the US (its an 85 landrover 90). The 300 tdi is said to be in good shape. Please contact Boris at hopeson1@hotmail.com if anyone in Europe feels like driving to Bulgaria for swap and for more details on condition, I am just trying to help him out.

Can you swap in a dead 2.5 NA and keep the 300 tdi for later use?

So what are you proposing? He wants to make the car original by the VIN for US export. Why would you give him a 12j and let him keep the 300 tdi as well? The deal is that someone needs to drive to Bulgaria to do the swap.

And I should add that the guy is a retired Canadian living in Bulgaria so there won't be a language barrier for anyone who speaks English.

Asif - you might be better posting this on the UK forums, there are probably a number of people with connections or even property in the region willing to help. I recall around 10 years ago there was quite a market for second homes due to the lower prices and both skiing and wine regions.

I'm guessing you are suggesting I am trying to scam people here, please be mature with your remarks. I regularly import defenders from Europe and I don't scam people or even ask for crazy money, it saddens me to read your comment.

I am aware of that, however this board is not exclusively an American board so there could be someone on here from Europe, perhaps in a neighboring country to Bulgaria. The reason I didn't post on a UK site is that a 300 tdi is easy enough to get there for reasonable prices, would anyone really drive 1500 miles in crazy traffic to get it? and fuel on average is more than twice as expensive as the US.

It saddens me to see people that can't take a joke. That aside, someone offered up a viable solution to the problem but you missed it. A crappy 12j can't cost much. Have your Canadian acquaintance throw in a non running engine and either ship the 300TDi with it or sell it. Is he importing into the US for his own use or to sell? Seems like an overly complicated solution that you are proposing.

What are the rules on shipping a non running truck with an engine strapped down in the trunk?

According to him there are very few old defenders in Bulgaria so he cannot find a 12j. Having imported two vehicles from Bulgaria, he is right about defenders being scarce in Bulgaria, particularly 80's ones. He wants to export for resale, if he ships without an engine it will be imported as parts, not a vehicle and would cause problems for titling.

You have got to relax Asif. This is a good group of slightly dysfunctional guys. After I read your first post I too had visions of waking up in a Bulgarian hotel, in a bathtub full of ice missing a kidney and no engine in my Defender.
As for your friend, in my opinion he would be best off driving/shipping the truck to the UK, doing his engine swap there with a $200 clapped out 12J and then ship it and the 300Tdi from there to the US/Canada.

This 85 90 hardtop needs work and he's interested in selling it for a reasonable price, I think he wants 5k or so before shipping and he wants to sell it directly from Bulgaria. Its LHD and doesn't have any major rust. Driving to the UK is not worth it for the price he wants to sort out the engine issue. The 300 tdi engine makes this not importable to the US.

Sorry I wasn't in the mood for jokes, I really have nothing to do with this I'm just helping him possibly sell it to an American and maybe someone ends up with a good deal.

Are you sure?
There's mud under there that hasn't been disturbed in years!

Good luck in your search.

so ren Ching, now I am confused if you are also being funny, maybe I should just chill and laugh at your comment.
you are a world class jerk you know that? I said I have nothing to do with it? Get rich quick? I sell my imports for 4-5 k profit per truck, if that and it takes a lot of work to import these. So shut up and get lost, its a 5k truck, probably 8k after shipping. Rhd rust buckets go for about that in the US so go talk your trash to someone else.

and btw, this thread started as a swap offer for a 300 tdi, not selling the truck. I just posted that to explain the reason behind the desired engine swap. I have not even seen the pictures, I'm just helping him try to find an engine. Lots of loud mouth perfectionists on this board, kind of like yahoo comments.

Where to start? The shredded tire cover, underside covered in thick mud, every panel creased, sagging, misaligned doors, missing rear door glass, faded, UV'ed out/broken lights, smashed door pillar, chewed up (by the dog?) wheel arches, light bezels, and door seals, missing sills and smashed side steps, "custom" rear crossmember indicating chassis rot and subsequent cheap bastard "repair", trashed interior, and and then you post a video where someone (the dog again, maybe?) grinds hard going into second.

Not to mention the hare-brained scheme of trading the engine away to make it US legal. Bottom line, this truck is not worth the cost of importation, never mind your suggested value of 5k US. And the container costs? Ask our resident importation expert what he thinks a container shipment of Land Rovers to the USA might cost these days. Stop wasting our time. If it is so good, bring it to Canada and sell it there.
Channeling your inner Dale Carnegie again I see.
