Yeah, please keep us posted! I am interested in this swap. I have a 2000 TDI Jetta that is getting rough to look at. I'd love to transplant the engine into a super light 88 or 90 contraption.

Sorry all - been busy with life and other work stuff and have not had much time for this. It's still in the works and I hope to have one completed around the end of the year. Again, sorry to be dragging but some (good) life changes and such have gotten in the way!

As long as it doesn't take you as long to do these as it has that guy Cohbra for those fire extinguisher holders, we'll cut you some slack.

Correct, due to the strict rules at the borders, this will have to stay on this side of the Atlantic....

I am talking to the machine shop again this week - it may be sooner but I didn't want to over-promise anything.

I was seriously considering that one last year, hate to say, but I'm glad I passed on it but still it looks like an awsome ride.

@rivermike. What is that drive shaft thingy coming off the front of the motor? Looks like a clean install

Yes, we thought it was a great engine to use ... afterall it does 135 MPH in the Audi A6, matted to the auto ZF gearbox is makes a very smooth motorway cruiser at 100 MPH.

Yep, certainly a very attractive price for someone that does not require a fully rebuild or intents to do it themselves.

The V6 is a great engine but not practical here since they were never sold in North America except for very recent models. I am hoping we see a cheap adapter plate kit that bolts the VW pattern to the V8 R380 bellhousing. The only problem is the starter on the VW is on the "transmission" side due to the FWD application, might be tricky to make it work, but I suspect it could be located on the rear of the engine, where the CV axle once was in a FWD application.

The starter is a very easy "problem". Not a concern in any way.

Still coming... Thanks for the patience.

Doug,

If you need any ALH engine parts let me know. I've got a engine completely stripped and everything in between. I was parting TDI's at one time and have plenty of spares to keep mine rolling.

Nothing currently new - waiting on the machine shop. I think he's about as busy as I've been and I need to rattle his case a little. I'll call him tomorrow and see if I can swing by and talk with him again.

He has the block and the bellhousing/clutch etc and was going to measure it all and load it into his computer. I am still trying to find a proper drawing of the rover bellhousing and crank dimensions.

Doug, have you run a VW tdi in a rover? I'm trying to picture what an ALH with the mods you said you are running would like be in a defender vs a 200tdi. The displacement is smaller but with the vnt it seems like it would have decent torque right off the bat. I also bet it would be smoother and quieter than a 200tdi, don't you think?
