For only $300 wouldn't it make sense to keep the Original engine with something as rare as an NAS? Maybe I'm just optimistic about NAS Defender owners like myself someday restoring them. I figure by the time I'm 50 yrs old (I'm 28 now) NAS's should be valued over $100,000

Is the VIN # actually stamped on the engine? I don't really have anywhere to store it long term.

Just heard of that BMW swap last week. Where's a good info source on that? I'm really leaning to rdavis's OM617 diesel conversion when I get ready to swap

You can look over the parts diagrams. I'm making a replica of the South African Defender 2.8i except with a newer version of the engine and left-hand drive of course. Apparently BMW/Land Rover originally intended to sell the BMW powered Defenders in the US but that got cancelled when they had to stop selling them here and for whatever reason they chose South Africa to receive part of the surplus supply of NAS chassis.

That sounds like an awesome swap. Long block? What tranny comes with it? I'd love to do something like that someday but I won't give up my third pedal! Plus, manuals are awesome theft deterrents! Can this BMW engine adapt/mate to the R380 5 speed?

You know that I'm selling the Rover V8 right? I'm keeping the transmission. Yes, the BMW engine can mate with the R380 using the Defender 2.8i/Range Rover 2.5 DSE bellhousing and input shaft, clutch, & flywheel.

Yup. Congrats on the sale too. I was just wanting to keep abreast of all the semi-straight forward re-power options that still utilize a manual transmission, especially the R380, just because it's already in! More motor money! ;-)
